Credit Union robbery in La Porte, man captured

LA PORTE ? A man Tuesday allegedly robbed a La Porte credit union then fled but was captured when he crashed his vehicle.

Just before 10 a.m., officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at First Trust Credit Union at 402 J St.

Responding officers were informed the suspect described as a white male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a blue bandana over his face had fled the scene of the hold-up in a blue Pontiac and was driving southbound on J St., said police.

According to police, investigators were informed the suspect displayed a knife inside the business and demanded the money.

Eventually, police said the suspect crashed his vehicle near the intersection of Silverbrook Ave and Greenwood Ave. off Indiana 4 on the city's southeast side. ?

With the help of some ''very observant citizens''and members of the La Porte County Sheriff?s Department, police said a suspect was taken into custody.

Nick Zupko, 22, of La Porte was being held on Class B felony armed robbery.

Whether money was taken was not disclosed.

The credit union undergoing an expansion closed after the robbery.

Customers getting out of their vehicles headed back after seeing notice on the?

glass doors that the credit union was closed ''due to an emergency.''

All work on the expansion at the credit union also seemed to stop with all machines and construction trailer vacated during the afternoon.

Officials with the credit union could not be reached for comment.

The credit union in the fall began work to double its existing size to 3,000 square feet by spring.

Two additional offices, a new lobby, additional parking and one more drive-through lane are among the new features being added.

First Trust Credit Union began in 1959 and now has 13,000 members at five branches in LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso, Wheatfield and Rensselaer, credit union officials previously said.
