More than 3,500 Americans die annually as a result of fires, over 18,300 are injured. There is no data on the number of pets kills or injured - but the number are not?insignificant.
Trupanion - the pet insurance company - takes fire seriously. and they're right. According to the U.S Fire Administration, many fires could be prevented, and many lives (human and animal) with preparation.
Here are some tips
- All homes should have smoke alarms (with live batteries). November, when the clocks are changed is an excellent time to change those batteries.
- Be careful and use common sense when lighting candles. Not only might pets knock candles over, a cat passing by a candle might catch on fire. Aromatic candles can be very dangerous (even life threatening) to pet birds.
- Use appliances according to?manufacturer's?safety ?precautions. ?Overheating, unusual smells, shorts and sparks are all warning signs that appliances need to be shut off, then replaced or repaired. Unplug appliances when not in use.
- Take special precautions with portable heaters.
- Make sure fireplaces are cleaned on a regular schedule.
- Keep matches and lighters away from young children.
Include pets when practicing escape plan. Leashes need to be kept in a handy place, and the same for cat carriers. Best if cats are trained to accept carriers.
In the event of an emergency, help keep your pets safe with a Trupanion pet safety sticker. When applied to the window of your front and back door, or to the door itself, the safety sticker alerts rescue personnel that pets live in your home. Stickers are free. Click HERE?to receive, it's free.
