Every house will encounter water damage at some point, and some of that may be significant. With electrical wiring running through each room in our homes, the potential for further complications becomes clear. Water can wreck electrical systems, and even the best case situations may require substantial cleaning, repair, and inspection prior to a given component may be used again.

If you are facing a flood or other severe weather event, there is always the likelihood you may have to leave your residence. Know where the electrical box is so that you will be able to shut off all electricity at the source. Electrical items should be moved to higher levels in the home. Larger gadgets such as washer/dryers or refrigerators may be elevated as much as probable. Every little bit helps.

Power outlets and the aforementioned electrical box can also be moved to higher levels on the wall; an average of 12 inches over any projected flood levels really should do it. This sort of work should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

After any sort of water damage, reconnecting the power may have to be properly authorized by your local power organization, and this authorization may only come after any repairs have been manufactured and proper documentation has been submitted.
