Romney's VP Search Head Teases on Twitter

Beth Myers, the head of Mitt Romney's secretive vice presidential search, kept the mystery alive Friday when she gave a "Friday Follow" shout out to a number of potential running mates for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Tweeting from the handle @BethMyers2012, Myers, who only has one other tweet on her account, sent out a Friday Follow message with the names of six potential vice presidential contenders and one person most people don't even think is being considered for the number two spot.

" #FF @KellyAyotte @timpawlenty @GovChristie @BobbyJindal @marcorubio @RepPaulRyan @newtgingrich," Myers tweeted, spurring a flurry of speculation from reporters on Twitter about the names both on and off the list.

Get more pure politics at ABC News.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

But soon after, Myers, tweeted a second message, rounding out the list with more names widely considered to be on Romney's list.

" #FF @robportman @bobmcdonnell @CondoleezzaRice @johnthune @Gov_Martinez @RickSantorum."

That doesn't exactly narrow it down.

While Romney is on his foreign trip, the Romney campaign has dispatched a number of potential candidates, including Govs. Bobby Jindal, Bob McDonnell, and Tim Pawlenty, Sens. Rob Portman and Marco Rubio, and Rep. Paul Ryan to host events as a means of keeping his message in the news while he's abroad.

But with speculation about who Romney will select at a fever pitch, it seems like Myers may have been having a bit of fun at the expense of all the reporters dissecting every appearance, mention, and now tweets about Romney's future running mate. Thanks for nothing Beth Myers.

Carly Rae Jepsen: Threatened by Lady Gaga!

Carly Rae Jepsen is having a tough week.

The 26-year old singer was rumored to have starred in a sex tape, and then authorities confirmed that her email was hacked and there are nude Jepsen photos floating around somewhere.

Now, Lady Gaga has set her sights on Carly Rae.

Lady Gaga as a PassengerCarly Rae Jepsen in Red

With "Call Me Maybe" surpassing Gaga's "Born This Way" and setting the record for most weeks atop the Billboard 100 (7), the eccentric artist has taken to Twitter and addressed her young competition:

"@carlyraejepson (sic) I SEE you just swooped in and broke my BORN THIS WAY record of the most weeks at #1.. DONT GET COMFORTABLE IM COMING FOR YOU."

We assume the Lady was joking around, and this is actually a big sign of respect for Jepsen. Still, we might sleep with at least half an eye open if we were Carly Rae. Gaga's followers are dubbed Little Monsters, after all.

Badminton's Lee nears D-Day in injury race

Injury-hit top seed Lee Chong Wei believes he has given himself a chance of winning his race against time -- and claiming an improbable men's badminton Olympic gold medal.

Torn ankle ligaments caused Lee, 29, to be ushered away in a wheelchair during the Thomas Cup in May, casting serious doubt over the then world number one's Olympic campaign.

However stem cell treatment, plus 13 hours' rehab each day, and a flinty attitude have bolstered him physically and mentally, enabling him to confound those who claimed he wouldn't make it.

These trials have given him new perspectives. "It has been a long and lonely road for me since I suffered that injury," said the Malaysian who is the most brilliantly fleet-footed player of them all in full flow.

"To be honest, it dawned on me during that time who were my real friends, who actually cared for me, Chong Wei, the ordinary person.

"So many walked away, but never once did I ever think of calling it quits. All this negativity spurred me on to prove a point."

Lee wants the gold medal, both to improve on the silver medal he won in Beijing four years ago, and to finally get the better of his nemesis Lin Dan in a major event.

Coping with the sensational Lin, China's Olympic and world champion, is perhaps the hardest task in the history of badminton, and Lee also has to deal with the memory of the last time they played at Wembley arena last August.

Lee held two match points against Lin in a monumental world final. Afterwards, he said he was considering extending his career for a year to the next world titles in 2013, having spoken of retiring at the Olympics.

"That was a stunning defeat as I was almost there, but all of a sudden the title vanished right before my eyes," Lee remembers. "That defeat still lingers in my mind, and it has strengthened my resolve to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

"Wembley arena was unkind to me 12 months ago, so let's hope Lady Luck will smile at me this time around."

Lin, who also beat Lee in the Beijing 2008 final, was generous towards his long-term adversary.

"We are long-time competitors, but our biggest enemy is not each other, but injury," he said. "As his competitor, I wish him to come back as quickly as possible."

However Lee avoided admitting that Lin, his barrier for more than six years, is the greatest player ever, and instead suggested retired Chinese world champions Yang Yang or Zhao Jian-hua, or Denmark's Peter Gade.

However the 35-year-old Gade has had a moderate run-up to the Olympics and fell from the world's top four, putting him in the same quarter as Chen Long, the former world junior champion from China.

It also let former world champion Chen Jin into the top four, allowing China a maximum three qualifiers. The others are Lin, seeded two, whom Chen is seeded and drawn to meet in the semi-finals, and Chen Long, at three.

China also has the maximum in the women's singles, with a trio of Wangs -- Wang Yihan, Wang Xin and Wang Shixian -- occupying the top three world ranking positions.

If an unexpected threat to China's women is to emerge, it might come from Saina Nehwal, the Commonwealth champion from India, or Tine Baun, the former world number one from Denmark.

However the world's most powerful badminton nation is seeded top in all three doubles events as well, and in four of the five events altogether.

No nation has yet won all five badminton gold medals. However this time it looks very possible, China having captured all five titles at the last two world championships.

TSX rallies on ECB pledge, Barrick weighs

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks had their biggest single-day gain in more than three weeks on Thursday, led by financial and resource shares, as European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's pledge to protect the euro zone from collapse sparked a commodities rally.

Global stocks rallied after Draghi, speaking in London, said the ECB was ready, within its mandate, "to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro.

The spurt of confidence in the outlook for the global economy offset weak earnings from Barrick Gold -- the world's largest gold miner.

"That relieved tension somewhat and you saw a chain reaction," said Bob Gorman, chief portfolio strategist at TD Waterhouse. "As the euro rose, the U.S. dollar fell and in turn commodities rose."

The euro rallied to a two-week high against the dollar on Draghi's comments, encouraging investors to buy dollar-denominated commodities such as oil, gold and copper.

Canada's powerhouse energy sector jumped 1.8 percent, as U.S. oil prices rose on the improved confidence in Europe and on a sharp drop in U.S. jobless claims, which fell to a near four-year low.

Energy gains were led by top oil producer Suncor Energy , which rose 3.2 percent to C$31.86 after reporting a 28 percent jump in second-quarter profit earlier this week. The company on Wednesday also said it would scale back an ambitious growth program that had troubled some shareholders.

TransCanada Corp climbed 1.4 percent to C$44.80, and Enbridge Inc shares rose 1.1 percent to C$42.05.

The improved Europe sentiment helped Canadian financials, which rose 1 percent. Gains were led by Bank of Nova Scotia , up 1.3 percent to C$51.28, Royal Bank of Canada , which edged up 0.9 percent at C$50.85, and Sun Life Financial Inc , rising 4.2 percent to C$20.87.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> finished up 147.24 points, or 1.3 percent, at 11,639.75. It was the index's largest one-day percentage jump since July 3.

BARRICK WEIGHS ON MINERS

Shares of Barrick, the world's largest gold producer, plunged 4.2 percent to C$33.04 after the company reported a 35 percent decline in quarterly profit and said the cost of building its massive Pascua-Lama gold mine in South America would likely be 50 to 60 percent higher than the top end of its earlier estimate of $4.7 billion to $5 billion.

"The market is disappointed that companies are not in more control of their costs," said John Hughes, senior mining analyst at Desjardins Securities. "That's evident today in the Pascua-Lama project for Barrick."

Barrick also announced it would defer work on its Donlin Gold mine in Alaska, a project it shares with fellow gold miner NovaGold Resources Inc . NovaGold's shares tumbled more than 25 percent to C$4.07 on the news.

Despite the Barrick results, Canada's heavily-weighted materials sector, which includes miners, finished up 1.6 percent.

Goldcorp Inc, Canada's second largest gold producer, led gains, rising nearly 5 percent to C$36.50. Investors overlooked the company's second-quarter loss, instead focusing on its adjusted profit, which was in line with analyst estimates.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd saw its shares spike 7.6 percent to C$42.58 a day after it reported a 15 percent drop in its second-quarter adjusted profit, but raised its 2012 production outlook. The company also said it increased its gold output and that quarterly revenue rose to $459.6 million from $433.7 million a year earlier.

Resource stocks were also boosted on hopes that the ECB and the U.S. Federal Reserve will announce new stimulus measures when the central banks' policy committees meet next week.

"To the extent that we get quantitative easing, either from Mr. Draghi or the Fed, it would be a real lift for gold and oil," said Patricia Mohr, a commodity market specialist at Scotiabank.

Forced to think about families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky

An Internet avalanche of wrath uncovers a sexual predator and enlightens a blogger about remembering the "other" victims ? the families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / July 25, 2012

Dorothy Sandusky, wife of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, center, arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., on June 19, 2012. Jerry Sandusky was charged with 51 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

After the news of both the NCAA decision on the Penn State pedophile and Colorado massacre hit in the same week, we were so upset that most folks didn't really waste time wondering what the families of the bad guys must be feeling. Because so much compassion is expended for the dead and wounded, there isn?t much feeling left for the families of those who committed the evil act itself.

My July 23 Modern Parenthood blog on the NCAA ruling prompted a left-field response that blew my mind and prompts me to think more about the families of criminals.

In the blog, I lashed out at those at Penn State who knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky's acts as a pedophile and sex offender. And instantly, I was targeted by members of a Missouri community who linked a sex offender there with a donor to my children's chess charity. Suddenly my chess blog and YouTube videos ? part of the nonprofit organization Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) ? were slammed with outraged comments revealing that a donor to the nonprofit is a sex offender.

It was all news to me.

My best guess on how this connection was made is that people who were aware of the man?s convictions tended to look for stories slamming pedophiles and sex offenders, and it wasn?t a big leap from my Monitor blog to my chess blog and videos, which are prominently featured in the donor?s home state of Missouri where he sold brightly colored and patterned chess boards for children.

While most people might not think of chess as a child's playground, more than half of the 45 million Americans who play chess are children playing in schools and community centers. The Glos company, which donated the chessboards to my organization, was trying to strike deals with major school systems as well as the Boy Scouts which created a chess merit badge last August. So this is a very big deal to this little company.

I have never met James C. Walker in person, nor his wife Laura. It is she who owns and operates Glos Games, while he designed boards and did marketing and sales. I am told he no longer has any contact with the company.

After a series of phone calls a year ago, Laura and I became friends. Jimmy and his larger-than-life persona over the phone irritated me so badly that I just stopped dealing with him, except on rare occasions when Laura wasn't available.

"Ruby Sparks" review: when cute becomes cutesy

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - To be fair, "Ruby Sparks" is probably the best amalgam of "Annie Hall," "Weird Science," "The Bride of Frankenstein," "Stranger than Fiction" and "Xanadu" that anyone's ever going to make.

But the fact that I could so easily come up with that list of titles while watching the movie - when I would rather have been watching any of the films on that list - doesn't speak all that well for this second effort from "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

There would be interesting connections to be made regarding the fact that Zoe Kazan both wrote the script and stars in the title role as a woman who is literally a writer's creation if Kazan's own literary efforts had anything new to say about how men try to control women, or how quirks that initially seem endearing become thoroughly annoying, or how artists depict the world as they'd like to see it rather than how it really is.

Instead, "Ruby Sparks" assaults the audience with such an unending charm offensive that what initially seems cute becomes cutesy, and what feels quirky descends into twee.

Blocked author Calvin (Paul Dano) hasn't produced a major piece of writing since a decade ago when, as a 19-year-old high-school dropout, he wrote a culture-shaping, best-selling novel. Now he stares at his electric Olympia typewriter - yes, this is one of those characters in one of tho-e movies ? unable to imprint upon the blank page. The only people Calvin connects to in the outside world are his gregarious brother Harry (Chris Messina) and his therapist Dr. Rosenthal (Elliott Gould).

It's Dr. Rosenthal who assigns Calvin to write a page, no matter how terrible, and Calvin finds inspiration in his dreams to write about his ideal woman, Ruby (Kazan). And then one morning she's standing in his kitchen eating breakfast. Calvin thinks he's losing his mind, but then he realizes that other people can see her.

Everything's great at first, but eventually Ruby chafes under Calvin's doting attention and the fact that he doesn't have friends. When she starts making a move toward leaving the relationship, will her creator resist the temptation to pull his manuscript out of the drawer and to start editing Ruby to be more pliable, easier to manipulate, more the woman Calvin thinks he wants but can't control once he has her?

"Ruby Sparks" certainly touches on some potentially fascinating concepts, but it never delivers on any of its notions. Worse, the film doesn't trust the audience to understand the implications beneath its fantasy surface - there's a completely unnecessary scene in which Calvin's ex (Deborah Ann Woll) turns up to catalog his faults, as though we hadn't already figured those out for ourselves by watching how he treats (and revises) Ruby.

And while Ruby herself takes the expression "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" to new levels of literalness, Kazan doesn't make this creation as appealing as a more seasoned actress might.

She and Dano have been interesting to watch in other movies, but this time out, he's such a hipster downer (all the way to his gray cardigans) and she's so artificially twinkly that I didn't particularly care what happened to either of them, together or apart.

There are some memorable turns by Messina and Annette Bening (as Calvin and Harry's earth-mother mom) and Antonio Banderas (as mom's artist boyfriend), and cinematographer Matthew Libatique ("Black Swan," "Iron Man") gives Los Angeles a breezy sheen as Calvin and Ruby hit any number of movie-nerd hotspots, including the Egyptian Theater, the Hammer Museum and the outdoor screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Like a lot of young-adult relationships, "Ruby Sparks" feels charming at first, becomes less interesting as it goes along, and winds up barely memorable by the end. Consider saving yourself the heartache and postponing your date until you can meet on your Netflix queue in about six months.

S&P 500, Nasdaq fall on Apple's miss; Dow gains

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 fell for a fourth day and the Nasdaq dropped on Wednesday after a rare earnings stumble from Apple, while strong results from Boeing and Caterpillar lifted the Dow.

Apple Inc , the most valuable U.S. company by market capitalization, reported late on Tuesday sales that fell short of Wall Street's expectations as the European economy sagged and consumers held off buying iPhones before a new version expected in the autumn.

Shares fell 4.3 percent to $574.97. Without Apple's losses, the S&P would have ended higher.

The price-weighted Dow industrials managed gains thanks to Caterpillar and Boeing . Caterpillar rose 1.4 percent to $82.60 after its quarterly profit easily beat Wall Street's expectations.

The world's largest maker of construction machines also raised its 2012 forecast.

"Expectations have been very low and this is a huge positive for the market," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

Hope that the Federal Reserve will act soon to provide more stimulus to the economy also supported stocks. A report in The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday said Fed officials may be moving closer to taking more steps to aid the flagging economy.

Because of those expectations "bank stocks are performing relatively well," said Thomas Villalta, portfolio manager for Jones Villalta Asset Management in Austin, Texas. The KBW bank index <.bkx> was up 0.5 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 58.73 points, or 0.47 percent, at 12,676.05. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 0.42 point, or 0.03 percent, at 1,337.89. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 8.75 points, or 0.31 percent, at 2,854.24.

Housing stocks ranked among the worst performers on data for June showed the biggest drop in U.S. single-family home sales in more than a year. The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> tumbled 3 percent, pulled lower by a 3.7 percent drop in D.R. Horton shares to $17.98.

The S&P 500 once again tested its 50-day moving average around 1,332. The benchmark index broke through that level on Tuesday but rebounded above it after reports the Fed was likely to provide more stimulus.

Boeing also helped the Dow when it reported a larger-than-expected increase in second-quarter profit and raised its full-year earnings forecast. The company said rising airplane deliveries offset higher pension costs. Boeing's stock gained 2.8 percent to $74.03.

Sixty-three percent of S&P 500 companies have surpassed earnings expectations so far, just a touch above the 62 percent long-term average, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Ford Motor Co reported a better-than-expected second-quarter profit but roughly doubled its forecast for losses in Europe where a deepening economic crisis pushed the auto industry's sales to their lowest level in nearly 20 years. Ford shares edged down 1 percent to $8.97.

Ex-Penn State president disputes Freeh report

Gene Puskar / AP

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier walks on the field in 2011 before an NCAA college football game in State College, Pa.

The former president of Pennsylvania State University, Graham Spanier, has written a letter to the university trustees denying he shielded Jerry Sandusky, the child molesting assistant football coach.

Spanier rebuts the claim in the university-sponsored report by Louis Freeh, the former FBI director, that Spanier and other officials enabled Sandusky's crimes to continue and failed to show empathy for the victims. Spanier also says that he himself was the victim of abuse as a child and would never cover up or defend such action. He doesn't specify what kind of abuse he suffered, but he has previously described being beaten by his father; his attorney said Spanier was not referring to sexual abuse.

"It is unfathomable and illogical to think that a respected family sociologist and family therapist," Spanier wrote, "someone who personally experienced massive and persistent abuse as a child, someone who devoted a significant portion of his career to the welfare of children and youth, including service on the boards of four such organizations, two as chair of the board, would have knowingly turned a blind eye to any report of child abuse or predatory sexual acts directed at children. As I have stated in the clearest possible terms, at no time during my presidency did anyone ever report to me that Jerry Sandusky was observed abusing a child or youth or engaged in a sexual act with a child or youth.

"Had I known then what we now know about Jerry Sandusky, had I received any information about a sexual act in the shower or elsewhere, or had I had some basis for a higher level of suspicion about Sandusky, I would have strongly and immediately intervened," Spanier wrote. "Never would I stand by for a moment to allow a child predator to hurt children. I am personally outraged that any such abusive acts could have occurred in or around Penn State and have considerable pain that it could perhaps have been ended had we known more sooner."

ESPN has published the full letter, first reported by The Patriot-News, which is available here.

Spanier's lawyer, Peter Vaira, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that Spanier received regular "disciplinary beatings" by his father, and had to have his nose straightened several times. Vaira said the abuse was never sexual.?

The Freeh report faulted Spanier, citing a long email trail?showing he was informed of the 1998 investigation and the 2001 incident.

"By not promptly and fully advising the Board of Trustees about the 1998 and 2001 child sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky and the subsequent Grand Jury investigation of him, Spanier failed his duties as President," the report says.

The report said that "the avoidance of the consequences of bad publicity" was the most significant cause for the failure to protect child victims and report abuse to authorities.

Spanier describes the 1998 and 2001 incidents

In his letter to the trustees, Spanier makes several specific rebuttals to the Freeh report.

First, Spanier says he thought that a 1998 investigation of Sandusky was being appropriately handled:

"I was apparently copied on two emails in 1998, the first, from Gary Schultz to Tim Curley on May 6 saying that 'the Public Welfare people will interview the individual Thursday.' The second email, from Schultz to Curley on June 9, says 'They met with Jerry on Monday and concluded that there was no criminal behavior and the matter was closed as an investigation. He was a little emotional and expressed concern as to how this might have adversely affected the child. I think the matter has been appropriately investigated and I hope it is now behind us.' I have no recollection of any conversations on the topic or any other emails from that era sent to me or by me. It is public knowledge that the District Attorney decided there was no crime to pursue. I don?t understand how one could conclude?from such evidence 'concealment' of a known child predator."

Then Spanier provides more information about a 2001 incident in which coaching assistant Mike McQueary reported seeing Sandusky nude with a boy in a shower. He says university officials Tim Curley and Gary Schultz assured him that the information was not reported as a sexual incident, a sex act, but ?as one that appeared inappropriate, "horsing around" nude in the shower:

"I can assure you that I hadn?t the slightest inkling until reading the Grand Jury presentment that Sandusky was being investigated for more than a single incident in a shower in 2001, something that was described to me only as 'horsing around.'

"I never heard a word about abusive or sexual behavior, nor were there any other details presented that would have led me to think along those lines. McQueary?s name was never mentioned to me, and it is clear that Curley and Schultz had not spoken to him yet when they gave me their initial heads up. I was in fact told that the witness wasn?t sure what he saw, since it was around a corner. Dr. Jonathan Dranov?s Grand Jury and trial testimony appear to corroborate that nothing sexual was reported to him in his meeting with McQueary on the night of the 2001 incident."

Spanier also says that he shared with the trustees what he knew in 2011, when Sandusky was being investigated by a grand jury, but that the university's general counsel kept him mostly in the dark.

Detail on the 2001 incident
Spanier supplemented his letter with details on the information he says he received about the 2001 incident in the shower. Here is his account in full:

Initial Heads Up

More than a decade ago, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz asked to catch me after another meeting to give me a ?heads up? about a matter. Looking back at my calendar for what is now presumed to be February, 2001, I surmise that meeting to have been on Monday, February 12, at about 2:30pm, following a scheduled meeting of the President?s Council. It was common that members of the council would catch me individually for brief updates following such meetings.

The meeting lasted perhaps 10-15 minutes. Curley and Schultz shared that they had received a report that a member of the athletic department staff had reported something to Joe Paterno, and that Joe had passed that report on to Tim and Gary. The report was that Jerry Sandusky was seen in an athletic locker room facility showering with one of his Second Mile youth, after a workout, and that they were ?horsing around? (or ?engaged in horseplay?). It was reported that the staff member was not sure what he saw because it was around a corner and indirect.

I recall asking two questions:

?Are you sure that is how it was described to you, as horsing around?? Both replied ?yes.?

?Are you sure that that is all that was reported?? Both replied ?yes.?

We then agreed that we were uncomfortable with such a situation, that it was inappropriate, and that we did not want it to happen again. I asked that Tim meet with Sandusky to tell him that he must never again bring youth into the showers. We further agreed that we should inform the Second Mile president that we were we directing Jerry to never do this again and furthermore that we did not wish Second Mile youth to be in our showers.

Notes:

There was no mention of anything abusive, sexual, or criminal.

At no time was it said who had made the report to Joe Paterno. (I never heard Mike McQuery?s name associated with this episode until November 7, 2011, when I read it in a newspaper story.)

The hour of the day was not mentioned.

The specific building and locker room were not mentioned.

The age of the child was not mentioned. I had presumed it was a high school age child under Jerry?s guardianship or sponsorship, since that is all I knew about the Second Mile.

There was no mention of any prior shower incident, and I had no recollection of having heard of a prior incident.

Follow Up

In reviewing my calendar for February, 2001, I note a double entry for Sunday, February 25. I had been out of town for several days and was scheduled to return in time to see a Penn State women?s basketball game at 2pm. My assistant noted on the calendar that I should stop in to see Tim Curley briefly in my way into the game. I have no recollection of that meeting other than that Tim was worried about how he shouldhandle things if he informed Sandusky that we were forbidding him from bringing Second Mile youth into our facilities and then Sandusky disagreed with this directive. I do not recall knowing about any prior incidents, but it is apparent from emails recently released to the media that Tim also indicated that there had been an earlier occasion when Sandusky had showered with a minor. We also now know that I was copied on two emails in 1998 that may have alerted me to that (the first one being a vague reference with no individual named) and the second essentially saying that the matter had been closed. I had absolutely no recollection of that history in 2001 nor do I recall it today. I don?t believe I replied to those emails nor was I briefed verbally.

Tim Curley sent me a follow up email that has recently been shared with the news media. My use of the word ?humane? refers specifically and only to my thought that it was humane of Tim to wish to inform Sandusky first and to allow him to accompany Tim to the meeting with the president of the Second Mile. Moreover, it would be humane to offer counseling to Sandusky if he didn?t understand why this was inappropriate and unacceptable to us. My comment that we could be vulnerable for not reporting it further relates specifically and only to Tim?s concern about the possibility that Jerry would not accept our directive and repeat the practice. Were that the outcome of his discussion I would have worried that we did not enlist more help in enforcing such a directive. I suggested that we could visit that question down the road, meaning after Curley informed Sandusky of our directive and learning of his willingness to comply.

A few days after the brief Sunday interaction, I saw Tim Curley and he reported that both of the discussions had taken place, that those discussions had gone well and our directive accepted, and that the matter was closed.

I never heard another word about this from any individual until I learned of the investigation into Sandusky. I was eager to assist the attorney general and was completely honest to the best of my recollection. I had absolutely no idea until midway through my voluntary grand jury testimony that this inquiry was about anything more than the one episode in the shower.

Notes:

I do not recall that I was privy to any follow up discussions between Curley, Schultz, legal counsel, or others. I had five out of town trips that month, my appropriations hearings, THON, a packed calendar with 164 appointments, an average of 100 incoming and 50 outgoing emails a day, and the turmoil of the Black Caucus disruption and the takeover of the student union.

I do not recall being involved in any discussions about DPW or the police, although I now assume that DPW is the ?other organization? being referenced by Curley and Schultz in their emails.

Khamenei tells Iran politicians to show more unity

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's supreme leader urged his country's politicians to show more unity as he warned the West that sanctions imposed over Tehran's disputed nuclear program would only make the government more determined to pursue it, Iranian media reported.

The sanctions imposed against Iran since the beginning of this year have taken an enormous toll on its economy, which suffers from a weaker currency, rampant inflation and high unemployment.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is unelected and holds ultimate authority over Iran's foreign policy and nuclear program, told Iranian officials not to bicker publicly.

Conservative rivals of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in parliament have increasingly criticized his handling of the economy and for not preventing sharp rises in food prices.

"The reality is that there are problems, however you must not blame them on this or that party," Khamenei was quoted as saying by Fars News Agency, in a meeting with officials late on Tuesday. "Instead you must solve those problems with unity."

"You should avoid useless disputes and airing these disputes to help preserve the nation's unity ... and officials should know these actions will not bring them any honor or prestige among the people," he said.

Ahmadinejad and his rival, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, were present at the meeting.

The United States and European Union have implemented tough sanctions against Iran, including an embargo of its oil, in an effort to persuade Tehran to give up its nuclear program, which they suspect is aimed at acquiring an atomic weapon.

Iran has repeatedly insisted its program has only peaceful aims, including generating energy and developing medical isotopes to treat cancer patients.

HURT

Khamenei said the sanctions hurt the West more than Iran, pointing especially to the euro zone crisis.

"The country will pass over the current economic pressures against the Islamic system, for their continuation is not to the benefit of Western nations," he said.

"They (Western powers) explicitly say they should intensify pressure and sanctions to force the Iranian authorities to reconsider their calculations.

"Not only will we not reconsider our calculations, moreover with even more resolution we will continue on the path of the people."

Three rounds of negotiations this year between Iran and major world powers have ended without an agreement, with Iran insisting it has the right to enrich uranium. World powers want Iran to abide by U.N. resolutions which demand it completely cease enrichment.

Khamenei said that in the past Iran had attempted a rapprochement with the West but that it had only led to world powers refusing to recognize Tehran's rights.

"In that era, the Westerners became so presumptuous that even when our officials were satisfied with three centrifuges, (the West) was opposed," he said. "But today there are 11,000 active centrifuges in the country."

Experts in the past have disputed Iran's reported number of active centrifuges - machines used to enrich uranium - citing technical troubles at its nuclear sites that have restrained growth.

The United States has exempted major countries from its latest sanctions, in return for taking steps to cut their imports of Iranian oil. Khamenei said the exemptions were an indication that the sanctions could not continue for long.

"All of these realities show that we must ... continue in the path of resistance," he said.

Insurer ACE reports 45 percent drop in 2Q earnings

Property and casualty insurer ACE Ltd. said on Tuesday that its second-quarter earnings dropped 45 percent as losses from reinsurance for variable annuities contracts offset an increase in premiums written and lower catastrophe losses.

However, Ace raised its financial outlook for the full year, in part due to the lower-than-expected catastrophe losses.

The company, based in Zurich, said net income was $328 million, or 96 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30. That was down from $594 million, or $1.74 per share, for the same period a year ago.

The latest results included $415 million in net realized losses, primarily from variable annuity reinsurance derivatives. Stripping out the one-time losses, ACE earned $2.17 per share.

ACE's net premiums written grew 4.5 percent to $4.13 billion for the quarter, and underwriting income rose 46 percent to $429 million.

Total after-tax catastrophe losses including reinstatement premiums were $41 million, down from $101 million in the year-ago period.

ACE cited the lower catastrophe losses and expansion of its financial reserves as it raised its full-year expectations for $7.20 to $7.60 per share in after-tax operating income. In April, the company expected earnings of $7.03 to $7.43 per share.

Analysts, on average, expect $7.74, according to a survey by FactSet.

ACE shares fell 72 cents to close at $69.17.

Fly Fishing Tackle Assessment: The Hardy Zane Ti

Dec 20, 2010 - 4:22:08 AM

Since I am an avid fly fisherman, I'm quite fascinated with how fly fishing tackle changes. As of late, I've learned about an ideal reel produced by Hardy, the Zane Ti. This is a reel that many anglers, myself included, are only able to hope for, simply because it was a limited edition style which carried a hefty price tag of ?5500.00, that's right, ?5500.00! For the sake of letting everyone know what a fishing reel at this price includes, this is a brief write-up on what you can anticipate from a reel of this particular quality....?[Read the full story]

Coarse Fishing Tackle Review: The Shimano Catana 2500 RA Reel

Dec 20, 2010 - 3:27:57 AM

In case you are a coarse fisherman, then you know the struggle of tracking different fish species. When you're out for barbell, bream, dace, perch, pike, grayling among others, your coarse fishing tackle must be as versatile as possible. Because of the fact that you're a coarse fisherman, you'll usually need to adapt very quickly to a variety of fishing spots, baits and strategies. For my part, I like pike since they put up a tremendous fight and give a rather good challenge. It doesn't matter what coarse species you may be partial to, you're going to need tackle that's both long-lasting and effective. Since I can't afford to buy top-of-the-line fishing gear, I'm constantly on the lookout for excellent tackle that's affordable. I'm getting...?[Read the full story]

Are Celebrities Making Pregnant Women Unhealthy?

While pregnancy weight gain has always been something for moms-to-be to keep an eye on, with today?s hottest celebrities giving birth and dropping pregnancy weight at breakneck speeds, is it possible we?re becoming too obsessed with the scale?

Research on women with eating disorders who are able to conceive has shed new light on an issue of growing concern ? women who now have unrealistic expectations when it comes to losing weight gained during a pregnancy.

While eating disorders are still quite rare, many healthy women are feeling pressure to gain less during their pregnancies so they can lose the weight faster. With role models (and actual models) such as Miranda Kerr, Beyonce and a host of other actresses who appear to be magically dropping back to their pre-baby sizes within months of giving birth,? the pressure is on for any pregnant woman to get back in shape after baby.

Eating healthy and getting exercise is always recommended during pregnancy, but many moms-to-be are losing track of the importance of actually putting on healthy weight as they carry a baby ? benchmarks set as low as 15 lbs of weight gain for some pregnancies are no longer seen as based on an assessment of prior weight, overall health, etc. but are seen as goals for who can gain the least and lose it quickest.

Improper weight gain or stressing the body with extreme exercise can not only harm a mom during pregnancy, they can also be harmful for the baby, causing physical and developmental issues. They can also lead to miscarriage or complications during birth.

At SureBaby, we don?t want to preach, but there?s a reason why women with eating disorders are considered high risk during pregnancy. There?s also a reason why your doctor is encouraging your to eat right and eat more, and most likely telling you not to stress too much about the scale. (We always advise you to talk often with your doctor about your nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy).

Call us old school, but we still believe that pregnancy weight gain is natural and healthy, and that women should use the time to really feel comfortable in their bodies, adapting and even celebrating their changing shape.

And while we all wish we had personal trainers and chefs to help us lose pregnancy weight as quickly as possible like the stars do, good eating habits and taking care of yourself and your baby are just as effective in dropping the pounds ? even if it does take a little longer than in Hollywood! Our advice is don't stress about it, and remember that under every red-carpet, form-fitted dress on a new celebrity mom, is likely a very good, but very uncomfortable set of Spanx.

Those are our thoughts, now we want to know yours. Do you feel there?s too much pressure on women to snap back into shape after pregnancy? Are we losing focus on what?s important?

Let us know in the SureBaby comments!

Lady Gaga New Music: Mother Monster Plays New Song For Fans On A Car Stereo In New York (VIDEO)

Lady Gaga must be in an Empire State of mind, because she gave her Little Monsters a special treat Sunday night. Sitting in her car, Gaga played a new dance-heavy track off her upcoming album.

It didn't take long for Gaga's fans to appreciate the new material. ?Amazing," one fan at the scene shouted. The assembled Monsters then began tweeting about meeting the singer and getting the exclusive first listen. "Just met GaGa," one fan wrote. "She was playing a song from her new album! ... It was a very heavy dance/club song! The beat was f---ing insane!"

Gaga will reportedly reveal the name of her forthcoming album in September, and while fans will have to wait a bit longer to hear more of this new dance track, Mother Monster has already debuted a melancholy piano ballad called "Princess Die." At the time, Gaga told the crowd, "It's in no way reflective of the rest of music on the album, but it's about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I've ever had."

Watch a barely audible clip of Gaga's new track above.

Improving Your Home Is Easy When You Know What To Do

It is common for homeowners to tackle home improvement projects. Anyone who has attempted a home improvement project can tell you that things do not always go exactly as planned. If you want some useful, knowledgeable home improvement tips that you can instantly use, make sure you keep reading this article.

Invest in a pressure washer so that you can regularly give the exterior of a house a good clean. It is inexpensive to rent a pressure washer, and you will be amazed at the results. Be careful, though, around windows and your roof line. You don?t want to knock anything loose!

Don?t just start painting the inside of your house. Prior to doing that, rub off any debris, dirt and oils that have collected on the baseboards and walls. Doing this will help the paint to properly adhere to your walls, and may even save you the trouble of applying an extra coat of paint.

TIP! Dusting your home and furnishings on a weekly basis is a good idea. Allergens and dust bunnies seem to breed when dust accumulates.

Whenever you work with electricity you should always kill the power at the circuit breaker. If you don?t cut the power to the area you?re working on, you could touch live wires. This will certainly injure you, and it could kill you.

If you are experiencing hard water, try this tip. Filter your water with a water softener. You will get rid of chemicals and also minerals in the water that cause it to be considered hard water. Many types of softeners are available to choose from. Shop around and find the softener that fits your needs.

Save money on kitchen remodeling by refinishing your current cabinets instead of replacing them. You can create a new and attractive look just by painting the bases and installing new hardware and doors. You will spruce up the look of your kitchen and make it look brand new.

TIP! The porch is an area that you should not overlook when improving your home. The porch is typically the first thing that anyone notices when looking at the exterior of your house.

Many people find that a little music relieves the monotony of yard work or other outside chores. Headphones should be avoided, however, so that you are fully aware of what is going on around you, for safety purposes.

To get the most bang for your buck replace your front door with a new, steel door. Research shows that homeowners gained back 129% of steel door installation costs upon selling their home. Steel doors are attractive and potential buyers like their looks. If that isn?t enough benefit, they also improve a home?s energy efficiency.

If you want to spice up your home?s exterior, plant an attractive garden full of brightly-colored flowers. Choose plants that are in season. Also, don?t forget to cut the hedges and bushes and keep the grass mowed. These small improvements make your home look much more attractive.

TIP! Use aluminum foil to cover your wall outlets before painting. It?s easier to use aluminum foil, and it protects the outlets.

If you are in need of a screen for your window, consider making your own. After cutting the frame kit to fit a window size, all that?s needed is to simply attach the screen by using an affordable tool and cording. Some windows use special screens but you can compensate for this in your design.

Remember to close the curtains of your home to preserve your rugs and carpeting. Sunlight will cause faded patches on carpeting that is frequently exposed to its rays. Instead, try to leave curtains and drapes open only in the early morning or late evening. Another alternative is to position your furniture in ways that block out sunlight.

Measure your windows properly before purchasing and hanging blinds. If you buy blinds without measuring the space, they may look bad or not fit at all. There are many sizes of blinds and some go on the interior while others go outside of the window.

TIP! Crown molding can create a remarkable difference in the appearance of your walls. If you have plain walls, adding some crown molding will put some pizazz on your room.

Negotiate a schedule to pay the home improvement contractor as work is completed and avoid a time line payment plan. You can fire a contractor if any work isn?t done to your satisfaction without worrying about unfinished projects.

The windows in your home may need to be improved. Update those windows! Try out double glazed windows. Although initially this may cost you a little money, you can save some money in the end with a reduced bill. Installing new windows can make your home more secure, too. If you cannot afford new windows, repaint and caulk your windows.

As you plan on making home improvement projects, try to find out how to do certain things by yourself. As long as you?re willing to get a little dirty and sweaty, you can end up saving a ton of money. Even the smaller companies out there will charge a lot of money per hour, perhaps upwards of 50 bucks. This can certainly add up and threaten to break your budget.

TIP! If your home is located beside a wooded lot, install a wooden fence. This can help keep annoying animals out of your yard.

When you are doing your planning, make sure you think about how you will get rid of the debris. A big mess results when demolition takes place, and you must put the debris somewhere. By finding space for it beforehand, you will not have to deal with a lot of debris getting in the way.

Weather stripping installed around doors and windows can make your home energy efficient. The savings on your energy bill will more than cover the costs of this inexpensive repair. You will also notice that your temperature in your home is easier to control now.

Ask about getting discounted supplies from both supply companies and regular home improvement retailers. Things that have been discontinued may be on clearance, see if there is enough of them to do your remodeling. Join store mailing lists to learn about discounts and sales. This is one of the best ways to save money on home improvement projects.

TIP! If you hire a professional, see to it that their work is guaranteed. A failure to properly read the terms may leave you with no recourse to take if the improvements don?t hold up.

Cleaning the gutters regularly and staying on top of other maintenance will save you from making repairs later. If your gutters are clogged, water will be trapped between the fascia and the gutters. This may cause rotting wood. Keeping your gutters clean is a well-chosen home improvement chore!

This article mentioned that not knowing how to go about home improvement the right way can be costly and confusing. Success is never guaranteed, but you can increase your odds with professional help. Implement what you?ve just learned, and change your odds.
