WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is serving up an election-year reminder that he ended the Iraq war, visiting a Texas military base two years to the day that he formally declared the end of the U.S. combat mission.

Obama's visit Friday to the vast Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso underscores a point Obama has made repeatedly on the campaign trail: He made a promise to end the unpopular Iraq war and kept it. Obama also visited Fort Bliss on Aug. 31, 2010, the day he announced the end of the U.S. combat role.

The White House says the visit is official business ? not campaign-related, although the distinction is not always clear. Obama will speak to troops and have a round-table discussion with service members and military families, the White House said.

Obama returns to the campaign trail on Saturday with appearances in Iowa.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the visit to Fort Bliss will highlight administration efforts to support U.S. service members and their families, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those efforts include attempts to combat what Carney called "unseen wounds" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Obama on Friday was to sign an executive order that would direct federal agencies to expand their efforts at addressing the mental health needs of veterans, service members and their families and to increase measures aimed at preventing suicide.

Among the steps spelled out in the order is an increase in the number of Department of Veterans Affairs counselors. It also orders the Pentagon and the Department of Health and Human Services to undertake a mental health study aimed at improving prevention, diagnoses and treatment of post-traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic brain injury.

Fort Bliss soldiers participated in the Iraqi invasion in 2003 and were among the last to serve in combat roles there. The post endured significant losses during the Iraq war.

Carney told reporters Thursday that the visit was about more than politics. He called Obama's record on defense issues substantive and said the president had a "profound commitment" to end the war in Iraq and bring U.S. troops home.

"Part of ending the war in Iraq responsibly is standing by those who served," Carney said.

Veterans are a key voting bloc in the closely fought presidential race.

A Gallup tracking poll in August shows Republican Mitt Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent among veterans. Exit polls conducted in 2008 showed voters who had served in the military preferred Republican John McCain over Obama by 10 percentage points.

At their party's convention this week in Tampa, Fla., Romney and other Republicans made repeated references to veterans. Romney broke away from the convention Wednesday to speak to the American Legion in Indianapolis.

Mindful of his poll numbers, Obama has sharply contrasted his record on Iraq and Afghanistan with Romney's rhetoric.

Campaigning in Virginia on Wednesday, Obama cited Romney's comment that ending the war in Iraq was "tragic."

His Republican rival "doesn't have a plan to bring home the 33,000 troops who will be coming home from Afghanistan next month," Obama said. "He likes to talk tough, but he doesn't have a lot of details when it comes to these critical issues. "

By contrast, Obama said ? repeating a familiar theme ? "When I say I will end the war in Iraq, I will end it. When I say that we will go after (Osama) bin Laden, we'll go after him."

As long as he is commander in chief, Obama added, "we will serve our veterans as well as they've served us. I mean it."

Five new species of cuckoo bees from the Cape Verde Islands

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The biota of island archipelagos is of considerable interest to biologists. These isolated areas often act as 'evolutionary laboratories', spawning biological diversity rapidly and permitting many mechanisms to be observed and studied over relatively short periods of time. Such islands are often the places of new discoveries, including the documentation of new species.

The Republic of Cape Verde comprises 10 inhabited islands about 570 kilometers off the coast of West Africa and have been known since at least 1456. Although the bee fauna of the islands was thought to be moderately well known, research by Dr. Jakub Straka of Charles University in Prague and Dr. Michael S. Engel of the University of Kansas have shown that this is not the case. A recent study published in the Open Access journal ZooKeys documents the cuckoo bee fauna of the islands, revealing that their entire fauna of cuckoo bee species is in fact new to science.

These bees, like the more widely known cuckoo birds, invade the nests of other host bee species. While the host is out collecting pollen for its brood, the cuckoo bee female enters the nest and deposits her eggs on the food resource. The cuckoo bee egg hatches and the immature promptly dispatches the host egg, leaving the pollen and nectar reserves for itself.

The Cape Verde cuckoos are mostly large, black-and-white species, almost zebra-like in their appearance. However, one species, Chiasmognathus batelkai, is quite small, merely 3.2 -- 4.2 millimeters in length. Despite its small proportions, C. batelkai is still the largest species of its genus, a group which otherwise comprises even more diminutive species. It appears as though at slightly less than 5 mm, C. batelkai is a remarkable case of island 'gigantism', whereby founder effects or genetic drift lead to an increased body size in isolated populations during the initial stages of species origination and differentiation.

When to worry about kids' temper tantrums

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Temper tantrums in young children can be an early signal of mental health problems, but how does a parent or pediatrician know when disruptive behavior is typical or a sign of a serious problem?

New Northwestern Medicine research will give parents and professionals a new tool to know when to worry about young children's misbehavior. Researchers have developed an easy-to-administer questionnaire specifically designed to distinguish the typical misbehavior of early childhood from more concerning misbehavior. This will enable early identification and treatment of emerging mental health problems, key to preventing young children struggling with their behavior from spiraling downward into chronic mental health problems. The new tool also will prevent rampant mislabeling and overtreatment of typical misbehavior.

Surprise Finding: Temper Tantrums Not Frequent

In a surprising key finding, the study also debunks the common belief temper tantrums are rampant among young children. Although temper tantrums among preschoolers are common, they are not particularly frequent, the research shows. Less than 10 percent of young children have a daily tantrum. That pattern is similar for girls and boys, poor and non-poor children and Hispanic, white and African-American children.

"That's an 'aha!' moment, "said Lauren Wakschlag, professor and vice chair in the department of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead author of a paper, published August 29 in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. "It gives a measurable indicator to tell us when tantrums are frequent enough that a child may be struggling. Perhaps for the first time, we have a tangible way to help parents, doctors and teachers know when the frequency and type of tantrums may be an indication of a deeper problem."

Until recently, the only diagnostic tools available for preschool behavior problems were those geared to older children and teens with more severe, aggressive behavior. More recently, there has been emphasis on measures developed specifically for preschool children.

For the study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, researchers developed the new questionnaire, the Multidimensional Assessment of Preschool Disruptive Behavior (MAP-DB), to ask parents of almost 1,500 diverse preschoolers, age three to five, to answer questions about their child's behavior. The questionnaire asked about the frequency, quality and severity of many temper tantrum behaviors and anger management skills over the past month.

The results allowed researchers to rate children along a continuum of behavior from typical to atypical, rather than focusing only on extreme behavior. Having a continuum will allow mental health professionals to intervene before there is a serious problem or watch and wait if a child is in the middle range. Early childhood is a critical period to identify a problem, because once negative problems become entrenched, they are harder to treat. This continuum also provides a barometer for determining when a child is improving on his/her own or through treatment.

"We have defined the small facets of temper tantrums as they are expressed in early childhood. This is key to our ability to tell the difference between a typical temper tantrum and one that is problematic," Wakschlag said.

For example, the study found that a typical tantrum may occur when a child is tired or frustrated or during daily routines such as at bedtime, mealtime or getting dressed. An atypical tantrum may be one that occurs "out of the blue" or is so intense that a child becomes exhausted. While any of these behaviors may occur in some children from time to time, when these atypical forms of tantrums occur regularly, they become a red flag for concern.

This developmentally-based approach is in stark contrast to the commonly used Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which does not provide age-specific markers for determining clinical significance.

For example, a symptom of behavior problems in DSM is defined as "often loses temper."

"The definition of 'often' may vary substantially for younger and older children and depend on family stress levels and other mitigating factors," Wakschlag said. "Since most preschool children tantrum, this vague criteria makes it exceptionally difficult for providers to determine when behavior is of clinical significance in early childhood."

"There's been a real danger of preschool children with normal misbehavior being mislabeled and over-treated with medication," Wakschlag said. "On the other hand, pediatricians are hampered by the lack of standardized methods for determining when misbehavior reflects deeper problems and so may miss behaviors that are concerning. This is why it's so crucial to have tools that precisely identify when worry is warranted in this age group."

Linking Tantrums to Mental Health Problems, Social Functioning and Brain Reactivity in Early Childhood

To establish the clinical significance of these findings, Wakschlag, colleague Margaret Briggs-Gowan, from the University of Connecticut Health Center, and their collaborators are now examining how these tantrum patterns are linked to a range of mental health problems and problems in daily functioning such as getting along in school, with siblings and general social skills. In collaboration with Northwestern neuroscientist, Joel Voss, the study also is beginning to use brain-imaging techniques to uncover links between particular patterns of brain reactivity and these early problem behaviors.

Replicating Findings in Larger Sample

In addition, Wakschlag and colleagues are replicating their findings about the developmental pattern of misbehaviors in a second sample of 2,200 children, with the next step being disseminating the tool. The questionnaire is now 118 questions but researchers hope to use state-of-the-art measurement science to crunch it down to about 25 key questions. An ultimate goal of the research team is to widely disseminate the MAP-DB questionnaire in a brief computerized form for parents to fill out in pediatric waiting rooms, with the computer generating immediate feedback to pediatricians prior to the appointment.

Father of Wanderlei Silva killed in car crash

Sad news from Curitiba, Brazil. Holando Piniero da Silva, the father of MMA veteran and all-around good guy Wanderlei Silva, died in a head-on car collision. Silva left his camp in Las Vegas to head to Brazil for his father's funeral services.

Silva recently released video from a visit with his family in Brazil. His father talked about how his son is the pride of Brazil, and beamed as he introduced his entire family to the camera.

"I learned a lot from my dad, even with our hectic life. My father worked three jobs. My parents lived for us," Wanderlei said. "The biggest lesson is that we can achieve anything through hard work and honesty."

Seven Local Causes to Use Like My Community Funds to Benefit Milwaukee Residents

Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of the nation?s leading auto and home insurers with three greater Milwaukee offices, today awarded more than $100,000 to seven local Milwaukee non-profit causes through the ?Like My CommunityTM Project?, a Facebook-based campaign. Milwaukee residents supported these causes by casting more than 42,000 votes on Facebook and through mobile texts.

The three top-voted causes were COA Youth & Family Centers (COA), One Heartland, and Running Rebels. Each organization receives $30,000 from Liberty Mutual Insurance, with One Heartland and COA Youth & Family Centers earning additional funds ($4,000 and $1,000 respectively) for generating the most votes on designated incentive days during the campaign.

Liberty Mutual Insurance also awarded the four runner-up causes with $2,500 each to support their missions. The runners-up include Hope House Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Pearls for Teen Girls (PEARLS) and Repairers of the Breach.

Through Like My Community, local Liberty Mutual Insurance branch offices nominated the seven causes and then asked local residents to vote for their favorite cause from June 25 through August 20. This marks the second year Liberty Mutual Insurance has hosted the Like My Community Project in Milwaukee, as well as in the Baltimore and Dallas-Fort Worth communities. Over the two years, the Like My Community Project has now contributed more than $600,000 to more than 40 local non-profit causes in these cities.

We are not surprised that pandas are efficient with their use of chemo-signals, as mounting evidence suggests that many aspects of giant panda life history are constrained by their energetically poor diet."

This study, which was recently published in Animal Behavior, confirms that old-growth forest and other factors like tree type are important for maintaining habitat that will support giant panda conservation.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - WME has signed "Suburgatory" star Jane Levy, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

On "Suburgatory," the 22-year-old actress plays Tessa Altman, the daughter of Jeremy Sisto's character. The ABC sitcom will begin its second season this fall, airing after "Modern Family."

Levy first got her break on the Showtime series "Shameless," which led to her being cast on "Suburgatory."

The California native also has a pair of film projects that will soon debut in theaters.

One is "Fun Size," Josh Schwartz' teen comedy that Paramount will release October 26. The second is "Evil Dead," a remake of the Sam Raimi 1981 horror film. Levy will star as Mia in the Federico Alvarez-directed project, which will open in theaters in 2013.

Levy is also represented by James Suskin of Suskin Management.

About 47 percent of Millionaires say they have increased their giving over the past four years, according to a survey of 1,400 investors conducted by Millionaire Corner in July, while 44 percent say they have cut back on charitable giving. Nine percent of millionaires, who have investable assets of $1 million or more, say they do not give to charity.

(Millionaire corner research shows that a significant share of high net worth investors is concerned with using their money to help others.)

Among investors who have increased their giving, the millionaire mindset appears confident, yet empathetic. More than 60 percent of Millionaires say they have increased their charitable giving because they ?can afford to.? These millionaires say their finances have not been significantly impacted by the recession.? Increased need has also inspired 48 percent of millionaires to give more. They cite the factor, ?Many charities are facing increased demand for services and decreased funding.? More than 18 percent cite the factor, ?I?ve become more empathetic to people in need.?

What?s had the biggest impact on the millionaire mindset among affluent investors who have cut back on their giving? More than 84 percent of millionaires cite the factor, ?I can?t afford to give as much. My discretionary income is down.? Less than 20 percent see an expanded role for government, not the private sector, and 18 percent cite the factor, ?Everyone needs to help themselves in a recession.?

While the recession appears to have made the millionaire mindset more open to giving, Millionaire Corner research shows it has limited the ability of Main Street Americans to give. Avistar Communications Reports Financial Results for the First Quarter of 2012 Total revenue increased 80% over first quarter 2011; Company experiences growth within key market segments and delivers on critical technology partnerships

Avistar Communications Corporation (www.avistar.com), a leader in unified visual communications solutions, today announced its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2012.

Financial highlights included:

?Total revenue was $2.5 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2012, compared to $1.4 million for the same quarter in 2011, reflecting a substantial improvement in Product division (product and services, maintenance and support) revenue. The increase is primarily due to $1.5 million in product and service revenue from the previously-announced license and OEM agreement with Citrix Systems, Inc. (Citrix) discussed below.
?Operating expense (research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative) was $2.8 million for the first quarter of 2012, as compared to $3.4 million for the same quarter in 2011. The reduction was due to the reclassification of expenses from operating expense to cost of goods sold for services delivered to Citrix.
?Net loss for the first quarter of 2012 was $1.4 million, or $0.04 per basic and diluted share, compared to a net loss of $2.4 million, or $0.06 per basic and diluted share, for the first quarter of 2011.
?Cash and cash equivalents balance as of March 31, 2012 was $1.9 million. Cash used in operations during the three months ended March 31, 2012 was $0.8 million, compared to cash used in operations of $2.8 million for the three months ended March 31, 2011.
?Adjusted EBITDA loss (as described below) for the first quarter of 2012 was $1.1 million, compared to an Adjusted EBITDA loss of $2.1 million for the same quarter in 2011.
?Total debt balance was $9.0 million as of March 31, 2012, consisting of $6.0 million in outstanding borrowing under the Avistar?s revolving line of credit facility and $3.0 million in principal amount of a 4.5% Convertible Subordinated Note due March 2013.
?On September 22, 2011, Avistar entered into a license and OEM agreement with Citrix to provide software to enhance the delivery of audio and video solutions to Citrix?s end-users. The contract requires significant integration of Avistar?s products into Citrix?s solutions. Payments to Avistar totaling $8.7 million were scheduled to be made as the integration and maintenance services are delivered and payments totaling $6.0 million were received through March 31, 2012. For the quarter ended March 31, 2012, approximately $0.6 million in product revenue and $0.9 million in service revenue were recognized on a percentage of completion basis. The remaining $4.5 million of the payments are recorded in deferred revenue and customer deposits on the balance sheet as of March 31, 2012, out of which $3.8 million may be refundable until certain integration milestones are reached.
