Fun in the sun: A look at youth summer sports camps, clinics in ...

The Girls' Sports Program at the San Antonio Sports Complex encourages socialization and personal empowerment.

Now that school is almost over, parents typically start looking for summer camps and fun outdoor activities for their children to do.

But if you haven't yet started or don't know where to begin, then don't worry - we've got your back. Oakland Local has searched and put together a list of free and affordable things for kids of all ages - especially young and teenage girls - to do this summer.

Girls' Sports Program

The city of Oakland's office of Parks and Recreation Youth Sports Department, has a new home. Since March, Oakland's boys and girls' sports programs are run and administered from the San Antonio Sports Complex, located at 1701 East 19th St. in Oakland.

?We were told in February that we were going to be given a center,? Christina Bagwell, the girl sports coordinator for the Girls' Sports Program at the complex, said. ?The focus of our center would be on providing a variety of sports that are out there. It gives us a little more flexibility and freedom. We now have more options to run programs freely or better.?

The girls' program consists of sports leagues, camps and clinics in basketball, softball, soccer and other sports. The program is available to young girls between the ages of 5 and 18.

?There?s this negative connotation with the city of Oakland. People assume that our programs are the same as neighboring cities," Bagwell said. "Our programs are ahead because most of them are free.?

Bagwell said that both the girls' and the youth sports programs have experienced many obstacles.

?There are always obstacles when it comes to city programs,? she said. ?However, we are trying to do more with less because our department is all about that. We find a way to hire and keep staff. This city-wide program serves hundreds of kids a day. Having this site will offer a solution to some of our obstacles, with one being staff retention.?

Aside from the sports programs offered, the office of Parks and Recreation also teaches girls about physical activities such as cheerleading, Double Dutch, track and field and golf.

?As a part of the program, we offer a girls? sports summer camp here at the San Antonio Sports Complex,? Bagwell said. ?Our services are offered to girls of different ages and stages. Young girls tend to go for Double Dutch, cheerleading and basketball. Most of them are drawn to that.?

?We do Junior Warriors, Junior Giants and Junior Football,? Bagwell added. ?We run that together. These are city-wide programs. We have tournaments held at centers all throughout Oakland.?

For more information, contact Bagwell at (510) 238-2952 or cbagwell@oaklandnet.com.

Girls' Sports Summer Camp

The goal of the Girls' Sports Summer Camp is for girls to be inspired and disciplined. According to Bagwell, girls in the camp have the ability to be both active and learn the concept of teamwork.

?We help girls build self-esteem, especially in a world where the media is telling them to be a certain way,? she said. ?This program is extremely important because it builds so many character traits that at times, are not identified in the moment. It both builds and reveals character. It also allows young girls to express themselves in a community environment.?

The registration deadline for this summer camp is June 15. The camp officially begins June 18 and ends Aug. 24. The fee for kids ages 6-12 is $50 and $30 for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15.

?A big thing that we do here is introduce them to new avenues,? Bagwell said. ?There are sports other than basketball that they can do or get into.?

Weekly activities for the Girls' Sports Summer Camp include: swimming every Tuesday and Thursday at Fremont Pool - located at 4550 Foothill Blvd. in Oakland - and field trips every Friday.

?We often take field trips, go to recreation centers in the city and help the environment by taking public transportation on our trips,? Bagwell said. ?Before we didn?t have a site; this year we are hoping for an enrollment of 60 kids. We are excited to offer this program and are just trying to establish a foundation for programs and services to be offered for summers to come.?

The weekly field trip cost for kids is $15. The San Antonio Sports Complex hours are from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a free summer lunch program included; after care from 3:30 to 6 p.m. is available for $10.

?We go to Six Flags, Great America and to an Oakland A?s and a San Francisco Giants game,? Bagwell said. ?Every Friday, the city rents buses and provides us with free transportation. We also go roller skating, ice skating, bowling, to the Oakland Zoo, Golden Gate Park, to the Grand Lake Theater, Roundtable Pizza and the East Oakland Sports Complex.?

Double Dutch

For four years now, the Redwood Heights Recreation Center has held a free double-dutch class. This year-round class meets every Friday at 3883 Aliso Ave. in Oakland. According to Bagwell, it is the most established Double Dutch class in the Bay Area.

?In my history, the department is so passionate to offer and serve the community,? she said. ?There is a lot of passion and commitment from our staff and department.?

Junior Giants T-Ball and Baseball

The Junior Giants baseball program is designed for kids of all ages. This is a free program that is held at recreation centers and other sites including Allendale, Golden Gate, Bushrod, FM Smith, Carmen Flores, Arroyo Viejo, Mosswood, Poplar, Lincoln Square, Manzanita, San Antonio, Franklin, Rainbow, Montclair, Dimond, Tassafaronga and Garfield.

?We definitely like to utilize our fellow regional parks, nearby cities and recreation centers,? Bagwell said. ?There are approximately 24 centers throughout the city of Oakland.?

The Junior Giants T-Ball program serves kids ages 4-8 and runs during July and August. According to Armond Gray, the youth sports coordinator for the Youth Sports Program, sign-ups have already begun.

?Although sign-ups started May 14 online or at any recreation center, the league starts June 23,? Gray said. ?People need to register on June 22 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. They can do so at their nearest recreation center or at whatever center they decide to play in.?

Depending on the site, practice days for Junior Giants T-Ball vary. Usually, game days are held on Wednesdays.

?We have ordered about 600 to 900 jerseys for the entire Junior Giants camp,? Bagwell said. ?The league is comprised primarily of middle school kids.?

Older kids between the ages of 7 and 19 can participate in this instructional baseball league, too. As with the T-ball league, these kids will play in the program from late June through mid-August.

?We are excited to offer so many programs,? Bagwell said. ?We don't like to close programs and turn down students. We have offered scholarships to many programs before. We know the benefit.?

For more information, contact Gray at (510) 238-6279 or agray@oaklandnet.com.

Ace Kids Golf

The Ace Kids Golf program is free for youth ages 9-17. It lasts through the summer and during each school year. Parents are advised not to drop off kids at selected golf courses. Instead, participants must be picked up from a recreation center or school site, transported to a golf course and then returned to the original pick-up location.

For more information, contact Preston Pinkney at (510) 351-5812, ext. 23 or ppinkney@oaklandnet.com.

First Swing Golf Program

Adults and kids of all ages are welcome to learn the basic skills needed to play the sport of golf. Classes are held on Mondays from 8 to 10 a.m. or from noon to 2 p.m. To learn more about youth and teen classes and class schedules, contact George Henderson at (510) 535-5608.

Warriors Basketball Camp Summer 2012

The Golden State Warriors will host five basketball camps in Oakland; including four starting July 9 at the Warriors Practice Facility in Downtown Oakland - located at 1011 Broadway. The other camp session will be held at Head-Royce School, located at 4315 Lincoln Ave. in Oakland.

Boys and girls, ages 7 to 15, have the opportunity to learn individual skill development and basketball fundamentals from current and former Warriors players and coaches. Prices range from $270 to $300. To receive discounts for multiple sessions and siblings, you must register by May 31.

More TV, Less Self-Esteem in Kids

May 30, 2012 3:05pm

gty african american children tv ll 120530 wblog More TV, Less Self Esteem, Except for White Boys

?

Children?s self-esteem generally goes down as TV watching goes up. But white boys are the exception, according to a new study published in the journal Communications Research.

Researchers from Indiana University surveyed close to 400 boys and girls between the ages? of 7?and 12, of whom 59 percent were black, and slightly less than half white, to see if there was a correlation between time spent in front of the TV and children?s self-esteem. They tallied the amount of TV watched and had the participants complete an 11-item questionnaire?intended ?to measure overall feelings of self-worth.

The existing research on the impact of TV on children?s health has focused on body image and eating disorders, Nicole Martins, an assistant professor of telecommunications at Indiana University and co-author of the study, told ABCNews.com. Given that children spend?more than?seven?hours a day with some sort of media (computers, TV, video games), examining the influence of? media on how they feel about themselves seemed long overdue, she said.

The study authors said that while white male TV characters tend ?to hold positions of power in prestigious occupations,?have?a lot of?education and beautiful wives,? the?TV roles of girls and women tend ?to be less positive and more one-dimensional. Female characters?are often sexualized, and success?is often measured?according to?how?they look.

Black men and boys are often criminalized on TV, the ?researchers said, which can affect their feelings of?self-worth.

According to the study, self-esteem has significant behavioral and emotional ramifications, and it is often correlated with motivation, persistence and academic achievement, particularly among children.

But Alan Kazdin, a professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale University, said self-esteem? had??not been?found to? relate causally to anything at all. While it can be one?measure?of clinical depression, that does not mean it characterizes or causes depression.

?As citizens, we think of self-esteem as very important,? said Kazdin. ?But I deal with aggressive and violent children who have self-esteem that can be much higher than the average child. Yes, every parent wants their child to feel good about themselves, but high self-esteem is not an elixir to get you through life. It is not the protective factor we?d like it to be.?

Building confidence in children, and helping?them gain skills and competencies that contribute to a better life, such as learning instruments, playing sports or sticking with a difficult school lesson, will help do that. If children do not have friends, setting up ?light play dates? will help build socialization skills, a ?really important aspect of life,? Kazdin said.

Martins suggested that parents limit TV time, and as Kazdin suggested, help?their kids ?gain skills that will?improve ?their lives.

?Too much time in front of the screen may displace real-life experiences, such as playing a musical instrument, playing ball in the backyard, that could build a child?s feeling of self-worth,? said Martins. ?Another option would be to actively mediate? ?children?s?media use so that they can more easily understand fantasy from reality.

?Simple distinctions and conversations like this help mitigate the impact such an image might have on self-esteem and comparisons to media characters,? she said.

cell phone jammer will automatically form the shielding magnetic field

If equipped with a grounding of electrical equipment insulation damage to the live shell, the ground short-circuit current will also be two along the ground and the body flow path, Id = Id ?+ IR, we know: In a parallel circuit, through each current value of slip resistance is inversely proportional to the size, that is, where: Id-ground loop current along the grounding value Id?-current flow through the body of the current IR-rR-body resistance rd ? The grounding resistance of grounding devices can be seen from the above equation, the smaller the grounding resistance, the smaller the current flowing through the body, usually large numbers of human resistance than the grounding resistance times the current through the body than the current flowing through the grounding of the fractional times .? cell phone jammer adopts the special advanced technology approach according to requirements of the market.Very hour when the grounding resistance, the current flowing through the body almost zero. Installation of protective earthing device and reduce its grounding resistance, not only to protect the intelligent building electrical system is safe and effective operation of effective measures is to protect non-intelligent building equipment and personal safety means necessary. 4 DC Ground: In an intelligent building, containing a large number of computers, communications equipment and building automation equipment with computers.? cell phone jammer will automatically form the shielding magnetic field within the specified range during working process. In these electronic devices during the input information, transmit information, energy conversion, signal amplification, logic operation, the output process through a series of micro-or micro-current potential quickly, and the devices often have to work through the Internet . Therefore, in order to make high accuracy, good stability, in addition to the need for a stable power supply, but also must have a stable reference potential. Larger cross-section can be used as insulated copper wire leads, one end connected directly with the reference potential, the other side of the DC grounding for electronic equipment. The lead should not be connected with the PE line, cable connection and N is strictly prohibited. These interfere with the production or because the phenomenon of coupling between the wires, or because the capacitance or inductance effects. The main source of high voltage, high-power electromagnetic radiation, natural lightning and electrostatic discharge. These phenomena would be designed to send or receive high frequency transmission devices have a great disturbance. Therefore, these devices and their wiring must take protective measures against interference from various aspects. Shielded and properly grounded to prevent electromagnetic interference with the best methods of protection.? cell phone jammer can intelligently and remotely control the power output. Froth, frocks and film at an anxiety-tinged Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? There was Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman, red carpet glamour and a crop of new Academy Award contenders ? but this was also the year the global financial crisis exploded onto movie screens at Cannes.

"La Crise" ? as the French call it ? bedeviled Robert Pattinson's disaster-bound billionaire in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," the unemployed Glasgow youth in Ken Loach's "The Angels' Share," the bare-knuckle boxer in Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" and the worried mobsters in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly."

We live in anxious times, and that feeling was reflected at the French Riviera film festival that's a byword for frocks and froth, as well as for serious cinema.

The mood seemed to be mirrored by the weather. Several days were unseasonably cold and stormy, turning red-carpet photocalls into rain-lashed ordeals.

In the face of this angst, the jury rewarded love, giving Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, to Austrian director Michael Haneke for "Amour," a starkly powerful film about an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health.

Second and third prizes went to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire "Reality" and Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share," and there were acting honors for Denmark's Mads Mikkelsen for "The Hunt" and Romania's Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for "Beyond the Hills."

Although the festival had a strong American flavor, there were no prizes for a batch of films that examined the United States, past and present ? often through the lens of non-American directors.

Australia's John Hillcoat depicted Prohibition-era bootleggers in "Lawless" and Brazil's Walter Salles crossed the country in his adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat classic "On the Road." New Zealand-born Dominik set "Killing Them Softly," a thriller starring Brad Pitt as a worldly Mob enforcer, against the backdrop of the 2008 U.S. presidential election, while Canada's Cronenberg sent Pattinson's stretch limo across a Manhattan of security threats and Occupy-style protests.

Cronenberg said that "it seemed at points that we were working more on a documentary."

American directors also looked long and hard at their country. Lee Daniels stirred the sexual and racial politics of the 1960s South into a death-row thriller in "The Paperboy," while Jeff Nichols' "Mud" spun a modern-day "Huckleberry Finn" story among Mississippi River fishing families whose way of life is threatened.

It would not be the Cannes Film Festival without moments of controversy ? and craziness.

The former was provided by the absence of any female directors from the 22 films in the festival's main competition. The situation drew letters and petitions in France and the United States, and even a small protest by feminist group La Barbe in front of Cannes' famous red carpet.

Cannes director Thierry Fremaux responded that he chose films solely on merit, but the festival promised to make a greater effort to hunt down films by women.

The baffling and bizarre were provided by the surreal appearance of the devil in a Mexican family home in Carlos Reygadas' "Post Tenebras Lux" ? which won the directing prize ? and by pretty much everything, including a parking lot full of talking stretch limos, in Leos Carax's "Holy Motors."

While Carax's mysterious meditation on performance and reality is unlikely to tempt Hollywood's Academy, there was plenty at Cannes that will.

There was no film this year with the obvious mainstream crossover appeal of last year's breakout Cannes movie, "The Artist," which went on to win five Oscars.

That film was acquired by The Weinstein Co., which this year has picked up "The Sapphires," a buoyant musical about an Australian Aboriginal girl group that played out of competition at Cannes. It plans a fall release in the U.S.

The likeliest candidate for an Oscars boost may be "Mud," an assured and moving third feature from 33-year-old director Nichol. The film gives Matthew McConaughey a standout role as a mystic-minded fugitive holed up on an island in the Mississippi, and also draws powerfully natural performances from child actors Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland.

McConaughey also appears in "The Paperboy," which features an attention-grabbing performance from Kidman as a sultry femme fatale. It could win her an Oscar nomination, and there could also be one for Marion Cotillard's intense performance as a killer whale trainer who has a tragic workplace accident in "Rust and Bone."

And there's likely to be a solid audience for "Killing Them Softly," a taut, 1970s-style crime thriller that sees Pitt play cynical straight man to some outstanding character acting from the likes of James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta.

Cannes is a strange blend of high-art seriousness and Hollywood chutzpah, where the latest Haneke masterwork coexists with Sacha Baron Cohen riding a camel down the seaside Croisette as "The Dictator."

Even for showbiz veterans, it can be a remarkable experience, as McConaughey discovered at the gala premiere of "The Paperboy."

"It got a wonderful ovation and I've never experienced that," he said. "I've never done stage, and so I've never really experienced an immediate response live like that. It was nice to take a breath and say, 'Feel this. Feel this, McConaughey. This is a special, once-in-a-lifetime thing.'"

Google, Samsung unveil new version of Chromebook

(AP) ? Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory ? the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers ? a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Google shares added $2.81 Tuesday to close at $594.34.

How the debt limit delay will affect US fiscal policy

What if hitting the statutory debt limit does not happen until sometime in the first quarter of 2013? That is increasingly likely, say the folks who watch this sort of thing. And it would completely change the politics of the coming train wreck.

By now, you know the great taxmageddon story: At the end of the year, a lame duck Congress and a new or newly re-elected president will face the confluence of three extraordinary challenges?the 2001/2003/2010 tax cuts expire, the automatic spending cuts adopted in 2010 begin to bite, and the Treasury loses its ability to borrow new money.

Skip to next paragraph Howard Gleckman

But what if that schedule is wrong? What if that third forcing issue?hitting the statutory debt limit?does not happen until sometime in the first quarter of 2013? That is increasingly likely, say the folks who watch this sort of thing. And it would completely change the politics of the coming train wreck.

Here?s what might happen:

Assume President Obama is re-elected. Separating the debt limit from those other fiscal issues strengthens his hand enormously in 2012.

It makes it much easier for him to push Congress to extend the 2001/2003 tax cuts for all but those?making $200,000?or more. Without the threat of a government shutdown, congressional Republicans lose their strongest leverage. And they?d have to explain why they forced a tax increase for nearly all Americans in order to preserve tax cuts for a handful of the wealthiest. Worse, they?d look like petulant losers.

The GOP hand will be weakened even more by the Congressional Budget Office?s new estimate that falling?off the fiscal cliff would likely throw the nation?back into recession. ?

Obama could, in that environment, come off as the voice of reason?the role he loves to play more than any other. He could sweeten the pot by offering a deal to delay the automatic spending cuts (which almost no-one supports) and set a date in 2013 by which Congress would enact tax reform and, perhaps, additional spending reductions. He?d try to work a debt limit extension into the mix too. But worse case, he could put it off until say, March of 2013.

The more interesting speculation, however, is about what happens if Mitt Romney is elected President. If he wins in November, there will be no living human in America more anxious to have the debt limit resolved in 2012 than Romney. He would, I suspect, give up almost anything to avoid having to face the debt limit shortly after he is sworn in. I can hardly think of a less auspicious start to his presidency than a knock-down drag-out brawl over increasing government borrowing.

Just think about it. If he asks for a debt limit increase as one of his first acts in office, already-skeptical tea partiers would abandon him in droves. If he didn?t, and allowed the nation?s borrowing authority to expire?.Well, no self-respecting ex-Wall Street guy is going to do that.

As a result, a newly-elected Romney would put enormous pressure on congressional Republicans to make the debt limit issue go away. In 2012. That would mean convincing the lame duck Congress to quietly pass a one or two year?increase.

Just defeated Democrats, who have spent the past year ripping Republicans for irresponsibly holding the debt limit hostage would, of course, switch roles and hold the debt limit hostage. Their price for dealing: Tax increases. Big. Fat. In-your-face-Grover-Norquist tax increases.

So watch what happens to that debt limit deadline. It could change everything.

Roadside bombs kill 4 NATO troops in Afghanistan

Four NATO service members were killed in separate roadside bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said Sunday.

NATO said in a statement that all four deaths occurred Saturday. It provided no other details on the attacks, including the nationalities of the service members.

One is thought to be a British soldier killed Saturday in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj region of southern Helmand province. The British Ministry of Defence announced late Saturday that the soldier died while travelling in a vehicle.

Welcome to the Kitsch Parade: Contestants To Watch During the Eurovision Song Contest Finals

On Saturday night, all of Europe will have its eyes on Baku, Azerbaijan, a glimmering petro-tropolis on the Caspian Sea. The country is host of the 2012 finals of the Eurovision Song Contest, which, for the uninitiated, is an annual competition that combines the international one-upsmanship and hypernationalism of the Olympics with the musical popularity contest of American Idol and then a veritable Ke$ha-ton of glitter dropped on the whole thing. It is kitsch to its core, and it is wonderful. It broke the careers of ABBA, Celine Dion, France Gall and Gina G and made ?Nel blu di pinto di blu? (the song you may know as ?Volare?) an instant international classic.

Only 26 countries remain in the competition after two heated semifinals, with the host country of Azerbaijan and the ?Big Five? (the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain) gaining automatic entry to the finals. Here are our picks of who to watch to be the next international cheese-sensation, and who to put your hypothetical bills on. (All odds are based, for reference, on bet365?s numbers, but may not be reflective of current trends.)

Pasha Parfeny ? ?Lautar? (Moldova)

Odds: 80:1

Moldova is a relatively new country to the competition, and it still never gets enough credit for choosing performers that really bring it. The past two entrants from Moldova have gone the Balkan funk-rock-by-way-of-Gogol-Bordello route and have both been really enjoyable. Although Pavel Parfeny loses points for not adopting Zdob si Zdub?s crazy gnome hat strategy, his brassy party anthem is a crowd-pleaser.?

Gr?ta Salome and J?nsi ? ?Never Forget? (Iceland)

Odds: 50:1

American viewers will likely be disappointed when they realize the J?nsi involved is not, in fact, the dude from Sigur R?s. Despite the odds being stacked against them, the other J?nsi and his duet partner, Gr?ta Salome, have created the ultimate bring-on-the-pathos epic love ballad flecked with hints of the Cold Mountain soundtrack, but the whole thing just screams ?Eurovision Winner.? The pure pop songwriting prowess and bring-down-the-house ending recall ABBA and the competition?s glory days. This one will be a big hit with the juries and viewers, but a Northern Europe deadlock with Sweden could cause another entry to slip past them.

Can Bonomo ? ?Love Me Back? (Turkey)

Odds: 40:1

Not sure what the best part of this is. The sea-chanty-by-way-of-Balkan-funk instrumentation, the lyrics ("oh, oh oh/we need a bit of rock and roll") or the video. Or all of it.?

Eleftheria Eleftheriou ? ?Aphrodisiac? (Greece)

Odds: 33:1

The party anthem from Greek singer Eleftheria Eleftheriou (great name) takes a fairly common Eurovision strategy, which is to use scatting or "whoa-oh" type hooks to avoid the language barrier and make the song accessible to all of Europe. It's one of the more summer-y entries, one we could see tourists getting down to in Izmir or Ayia Napa or wherever the kids are going these days. The song was well-received at the semis, so despite the low odds, definitely not wise to count them out yet. "Maniac" and "aphrodisiac" is a pretty good rhyme too, for what it's worth.?

Pastora Soler ? ?Qu?date Conmigo (Stay With Me)? (Spain)

Odds: 28:1

The pop star, whose most recent album reached the No. 3 spot on the Spanish charts, has been (jokingly) asked to try not to win the competition by Spanish public broadcasting organization TVE, as the country would face some financial difficulties paying to host the competition the following year, and Soler said in an interview?she thinks it would be ?impossible to stage the next edition because it costs so much money.?

Soler is a talented singer with a powerful voice, and the entry is better than Spain?s poor-performing effort from last year, but there?s not much to distinguish this from some of the other (and better?or at least more popular) ballads in the competition.

Roman Lob ? ?Standing Still? (Germany)

Odds: 28:1

I didn?t know the dude from The Fray was German. Just kidding, y?all, it?s Roman Lob, your charming rocker-type entrant from Germany (and the most likely to win American Idol, based on previous trends.) Lob?s got a great adult-alternative radio voice, but it?s the mercenary songwriting talents of recording artist Jamie Cullum and Steve Robson (the latter who co-wrote Rascal Flatts? ?What Hurts The Most?) that give Lob a professional advantage.

Jedward ? ?Waterline? (Ireland)

Odds: 25:1

Eurovision repeat offenders and X-Factor alumni Jedward are probably the only entrants in the competition to have a paradox named for them and to become an issue of international diplomacy. John and Edward Grimes, the futuristically dressed, mildly creepy twins who, by their powers combined, become Jedward, finished eighth in the competition last year for Ireland with ?Lipstick.? This year?s number, ?Waterline,? is better, but ultimately, once again, the hopes of a nation will lie squarely upon the shoulders of Europe?s tween fangirls.

Mandinga ? ?Zalieilah? (Romania)

Odds: 18:1

The combination of Latin pop with traditional Romanian instruments (most notably a Cimpoi, the traditional bagpipe) works, the hook is goofy and fun and the song seems to have a big international following on the YouTubes. It had mixed reviews on first appearance in its home country, but the voters like it, so it should fare well in Baku.?

Engelbert Humperdinck ? ?Love Will Set You Free? (United Kingdom)

Odds:16:1

The United Kingdom hasn?t been a true powerhouse in Eurovision since the 1990s, when they brought high-performing one-hit wonders like Katrina & The Waves and Gina G (?Ooh, Aah? Just A Little Bit?) to the world stage. In an attempt to return to greatness, they?ve enlisted one-time chart-topping pop veterans for the past couple of years?all-star boy band Blue in 2011 and this year, crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who once knocked the Beatles themselves off the UK pop charts. The ballad is cheesier than Branson, Missouri, but that tends to actually work pretty well for Eurovision. He could bring in quite a few douze points from the juries.

Nina Zilli ? ?L?Amore ? Femmina (Out Of Love)? (Italy)

Odds: 10:1

After a 13-year hiatus from the competition, Italy came back strong and placed second in Eurovision 2011 thanks to Raphael Gualazzi?s likable jazz-pop number ?Madness of Love.? Out of anyone from the ?Big Five? (the major Western European nations granted automatic entry into the finals), it?ll be Zilli and this sax-addled, ?60s girl group-meets-jazz-club number that recalls the early days of Amy Winehouse.

Zeljko Joksimovic ? ?Love Is Not An Object? (Serbia)

Odds:7:1

Serbia's entry has really climbed up the ranks in the past few days to become a surprise favorite. It's a ballad, there are strings, the singer is very talented. Overall, a solid entry and one that will go well with the juries. And a ballad won last year?but it was also a ballad in English, and the last three contest winners have all been English-language competitions. Could the choice to perform in Serbian affect his odds with fan voters??

Buranovskiye Babushki ? ?Party For Everybody? (Russia)

Odds: 5:1

If there?s an upset to be pulled, it will happen here. Eurovision?s ultimate dark horse comes in the form of six delightful grandmothers in traditional Udmurt dress. Buranovskiye Babushki (literally, ?The Grannies from Buranovo,? referring to their hometown of less than 700 people in the autonomous Udmurt Republic) delighted audiences at the national qualifiers and semifinals and have quickly become a fan favorite with their catchy bilingual ditty about having the family over for dinner and enjoying the company of loved ones. We?re pretty sure all of Europe at least secretly wants them to win.

As much as viewers love them, though, they may have trouble getting past the national juries, who consider this competition to be Serious Business and will not be mocked by your singing grannies. But, if they win, they?re donating the proceeds to building a church in Buranovo.

Loreen ? ?Euphoria? (Sweden)

Odds: 23:20

This is the heavy favorite to win it all, and it's clear why. This song (in English), performed by a former contestant on Sweden's Idol competition, could be a massive club hit with or without the competition, with its soaring-diva range chorus reminiscent of Katy Perry's "Firework," wide appeal and hints of Gaga's "Edge of Glory." This is the kind of Eurovision songs that make songwriters and producers foam at the mouths with rage thinking "Why, oh why did I not write this?"?

Marketing of real estate requires training and creativity

Like a horse and carriage, real estate and marketing go together. And getting that buyer to buy, whether a home or a loan, lets loose a veritable landslide of marketing tools and techniques.

From writing advertising copy to getting the attention of the news media, to all the printing companies, budgets, brochures, signs, models and mailings - marketing has become a complicated field.

For some companies it has become so specialized and technical only someone with a university graduate degree in marketing can make it work.

It is moving the product to the consumer, in its crudest terms.

At its most sophisticated, it can be an almost "edible" model home, a coffee cup decorated with a company logo, or a press conference complete with television cameramen and reporters.

When professionals take a creative flair to marketing's modern theories, marketing becomes an art.

Liane E. Shupp, vice president of marketing and public relations firm S. Robert August & Co. Inc., helps a variety of businesses involved in real estate organize their marketing efforts. She was formerly the real estate editor at the Gazette Telegraph and has 12 years experience working with newspapers in Colorado Springs.

She stresses the use of press releases to give information about company products or services to the public - but whatever the topic, it has to be newsworthy, she said.

"To get the media's attention you have to present the news professionally, get to know the people you'll be working with on a week to week basis, and learn that each editor has his own policy's and personal idiosyncrasies.

"To ignore that is not showing responsibility to that relationship," she said.

"I always discourage a client from turning in a story with no news value," she added.

Shupp sets up marketing strategies using direct mail campaigns and newsletters and likes to push grand opening promotions associated with charities, she said. A gift of $500 to a favorite local charity will help get the media's attention, she said.

It also promotes the company as a responsible private enterprise that accepts its social responsibility, she said.

"For most clients we use the company's public relations functions to help plan marketing. Space advertising or full page stories - which is more credible?" she said.

Corporate image is important to business, she said.

"Your image is part of what sells your product or services.

"You need to get across financial strength in today's economy if you're coming into the market with a new product or presence, or it's hard to set up business relationships," she said.

Marketing firms such as S. Robert August & Co. also deal with individual clients who are Realtors. The kind of services a marketing firm can provide individuals are personal brochures, newsletters and letters, or think pieces and market updates for mailing to potential and existing clients.

Budgeting advertising and public relations dollars will maximize a company's potential, Shupp said.

"Frankly, in most of the industry, 5 percent is standard but people in this market won't spend 5 percent. They get away with it but they're not maximizing their potential, they're just doing the same things they've done before," she said.

For George Hess, president of Vantage Homes, the product is the key to marketing.

Vantage Homes sells semi-custom and custom homes from $135,000 and up, and currently runs five fully decorated model complexes in different areas around town.

In the five years the company has been in existence, it has sold 200 houses and spends about 1 percent of its budget on sales efforts, he said.

"Try to build for your marketplace. What do those folks want to purchase?"

"We ask - who we are going to sell houses to, where do they come from, how much do they make? Like we know they'll have kids but they'll be older," he said. "How many kids will they have, and what ages? What amenities do they want?"

Vantage Homes maintains communications with local Realtors by hand-delivered inventory sheets, one for every project, once a month, to keep agents current, Hess explained.

Grand opening parties for the Realtor community and other associated business people bring helpful people out to the project so they have first-hand experience of the product, he said.

Sometimes small cocktail parties are thrown for perspective buyers of luxury homes such as Pine Terrace, he said. Vantage also hosts an annual homeowners picnic for Pine Terrace, where the homeowners are invited to bring guests that might be interested in the $275,000 to $655,000 town homes.

Vantage publishes advertising in specialized relocation magazines and takes a direct approach to relocation people, Hess said.

"But what we're always looking for is good solid floor plans in good areas that will hold their value," he said. Their marketing approach is missing the "themey" flavor of some builders and developers, he said.

"We try to give the neighborhood the custom look by breaking it up, with a mix of tile and stucco looks. There's a builder in southern California named Jan Peters who breaks up neighborhoods with the use of heterogeneous materials. It works," Hess said.

Marketing successfully is not a function of how much money you spend but how you spend it, according to Hess.

"We're conservative in what we spend. Look, we could spend $4,000 for a full page color ad in the newspaper, or we could have a party and feed 600 people. We want them to get out there because there's things going on that people don't know about. But not some great big drunken bash. A nice little luncheon," he said.

Hess has spent 20 years in Colorado Springs and markets to local taste in homes that he says is contemporary and at the same time very traditional.

The contemporary look is sometimes Southwestern and emphasizes soft, Southwestern colors. The traditional look has darker, more traditional colors, such as a model Vantage opened recently in Peregrine Valley that showed a navy blue, burgundy and cream color scheme.

"It's like the curved staircase we use. It's become a trademark because it works, like an old pair of loafers," said Hess.

The decorator for Vantages' models is Sonnies Interior Design Inc., owned by Sonnie White, a residential and commercial designer and member of International Society of Interior Design.

Sonnies Interior Design offers no-cost consultations with Vantage buyers to help them pick out tile and carpet, cabinets, woodwork stain and brick colors and coordinate the color scheme - another part of Vantage's marketing plan.

To get each potential buyer's attention as he walks into a model home, she and her team of designers decorate the Vantage models to look "lived in", she said.

They also match the decorating to the area, and have created a more eclectic model for the luxury town homes at Pine Terrace, and more casual schemes for homes in Peregrine Valley, where the price range for Vantages models there is $150,000 and up. They plan to move the Pine Terrace models into a more "sophisticated, New York feel" when the models are redecorated this fall.

They avoid over scaled furniture, and also use the builder's standards for things like carpet and light fixtures, so the "client when he or she walks in the door is seeing what they actually get," she said.

"When we are merchandising we're selling the house, not selling the decorating. The interior decorating is only part of the merchandising," she said.

Working on the navy blue/burgundy/cream model for Vantage was "interesting and rewarding," she said. "We had to search for those colors, but the builder wanted that color scheme, which had been used in a very successful model some years before. It was the samples - those colors aren't being used now and we really had to search to find them" for wall coverings, window treatments, furniture and carpets.

White said she follows some advice she received years ago and never uses blue for counter tops and carpet when merchandising a model home.

Gray is considered to be a color of success and is frequently used in model homes, but browns are not fashionable today, she said. "Except for your beige's, creams and off-whites, because of course you always have to use them."

Mixing Southwestern, contemporary and contemporary French style furniture and accessories will lead to a lived-in look, she said.

"Because people are collectors. We all are," she said.

SF official says Ouija board comment was joke

(AP) ? A San Francisco supervisor who said he consulted a Ouija board before a vote now says he was joking ? and the only spirit he was summoning was the spirit of humor.

Supervisors on Tuesday approved a non-binding resolution urging the Navy to name a ship after slain supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Supervisor John Avalos told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/MIq4dT ) that before voting, he believes he made contact with Milk's spirit and that Milk spelled out letters indicating: "Good riddance to don't ask, don't tell."

The quip made national news as an example of San Francisco wackiness.

Avalos now says he was just kidding and the closest he's gotten to the occult is reading all the "Harry Potter" books.
