How excess holiday eating disturbs your 'food clock'

Dec. 21, 2012 ? If the sinful excess of holiday eating sends your system into butter-slathered, brandy-soaked overload, you are not alone: People who are jet-lagged, people who work graveyard shifts and plain-old late-night snackers know just how you feel.

All these activities upset the body's "food clock," a collection of interacting genes and molecules known technically as the food-entrainable oscillator, which keeps the human body on a metabolic even keel. A new study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is helping to reveal how this clock works on a molecular level.

Published this month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the UCSF team has shown that a protein called PKC? is critical in resetting the food clock if our eating habits change.

The study showed that normal laboratory mice given food only during their regular sleeping hours will adjust their food clock over time and begin to wake up from their slumber, and run around in anticipation of their new mealtime. But mice lacking the PKC? gene are not able to respond to changes in their meal time -- instead sleeping right through it.

The work has implications for understanding the molecular basis of diabetes, obesity and other metabolic syndromes because a desynchronized food clock may serve as part of the pathology underlying these disorders, said Louis Ptacek, MD, the John C. Coleman Distinguished Professor of Neurology at UCSF and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.

It may also help explain why night owls are more likely to be obese than morning larks, Ptacek said.

"Understanding the molecular mechanism of how eating at the "wrong" time of the day desynchronizes the clocks in our body can facilitate the development of better treatments for disorders associated with night-eating syndrome, shift work and jet lag," he added.

Resetting the Food Clock

Look behind the face of a mechanical clock and you will see a dizzying array of cogs, flywheels, reciprocating counterbalances and other moving parts. Biological clocks are equally complex, composed of multiple interacting genes that turn on or off in an orchestrated way to keep time during the day.

In most organisms, biological clockworks are governed by a master clock, referred to as the "circadian oscillator," which keeps track of time and coordinates our biological processes with the rhythm of a 24-hour cycle of day and night.

Life forms as diverse as humans, mice and mustard greens all possess such master clocks. And in the last decade or so, scientists have uncovered many of their inner workings, uncovering many of the genes whose cycles are tied to the clock and discovering how in mammals it is controlled by a tiny spot in the brain known as the "superchiasmatic nucleus."

Scientists also know that in addition to the master clock, our bodies have other clocks operating in parallel throughout the day. One of these is the food clock, which is not tied to one specific spot in the brain but rather multiple sites throughout the body.

The food clock is there to help our bodies make the most of our nutritional intake. It controls genes that help in everything from the absorption of nutrients in our digestive tract to their dispersal through the bloodstream, and it is designed to anticipate our eating patterns. Even before we eat a meal, our bodies begin to turn on some of these genes and turn off others, preparing for the burst of sustenance -- which is why we feel the pangs of hunger just as the lunch hour arrives.

Scientist have known that the food clock can be reset over time if an organism changes its eating patterns, eating to excess or at odd times, since the timing of the food clock is pegged to feeding during the prime foraging and hunting hours in the day. But until now, very little was known about how the food clock works on a genetic level.

What Ptacek and his colleagues discovered is the molecular basis for this phenomenon: the PKC? protein binds to another molecule called BMAL and stabilizes it, which shifts the clock in time.

The article, "PKC? participates in food entrainment by regulating BMAL1" is authored by Luoying Zhang, Diya Abrahama, Shu-Ting Lin, Henrik Oster, Gregor Eichele, Ying-Hui Fu, and Louis J. Pt?cek and appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In addition to UCSF, authors on the study are affiliated with the Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in G?ttingen, Germany.

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health via grants #GM079180 and #708 HL059596, the Sandler Neurogenetics Fund, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

YEARENDER-Golf-Celtic Tiger and emerging China shine in 2012

LOS ANGELES | Wed Dec 19, 2012 7:29am IST

LOS ANGELES Dec 19 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy's dominance on both sides of the Atlantic and the clearest hint yet at the exciting potential in China were the biggest storylines in what may prove to be a truly transformational golfing year in 2012.

The coronation of McIlroy as the game's leading player was confirmed in sensational fashion when the exciting Northern Irishman cruised to his second major title by a record eight shots in the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in August.

Dubbed 'Boy Wonder' in his homeland for the past decade, McIlroy fully justified his other nickname of 'the Celtic Tiger' as he ended the year being showered with virtually every accolade available to him.

He followed in the footsteps of Luke Donald when he became the second player to win the money list titles in both Europe and the United States and he strengthened his position as world number one with an extraordinary run of form.

Long regarded as heir-apparent to Tiger Woods as the game's greatest player, McIlroy has smoothly taken over that role while Woods, despite triumphing three times on the 2012 PGA Tour in a welcome return to winning ways, has had to take a back seat.

The 23-year-old McIlroy is almost certain to be a dominant figure in golf for at least another decade but 14-year-old Chinese Guan Tianlang gave a strong indication of the likely impact from his part of the world well beyond that time frame.

Guan ensured he would become the youngest player ever to compete at the Masters by winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last month, tantalising proof of the vast golfing potential in the Chinese market.

The world's most populous nation had celebrated another coup just five months earlier when Shanshan Feng, 22, clinched the LPGA Championship by two shots in Rochester, New York to become the first person from mainland China to win a women's major.

Remarkably, Feng was born just five years after the first golf course was opened in China.

There were several other highlights during 2012 with Bubba Watson producing arguably the shot of the year to win the Masters in a two-way playoff and Ernie Els ending a decade-long drought in the majors to claim his second British Open.

THRUST INTO LIMELIGHT

The belly putter was also thrust into the limelight when Webb Simpson, at the U.S. Open, and Els, at Royal Lytham, joined 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley as the only players to triumph in the majors using a long putter.

That trend, coupled with the growing number of younger golfers opting to anchor putters to their chin, chest or belly, prompted golf's rulemakers last month to propose a ban on the technique which could come into effect by 2016.

However, McIlroy's stellar play around the world gave golf fans their most stirring memories in 2012.

He recorded four wins on the U.S. circuit among 10 top-10s in just 16 starts before ending the season being named the PGA of America Player of the Year, the PGA Tour's Player of the Year and winner of the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average.

McIlroy clinched the Arnold Palmer Award as the PGA Tour's leading money winner, with earnings of $8,047,952, and was delighted to follow that up with the European Tour order of merit with two events remaining.

"Winning a second major already made it a fabulous season, but then to follow Luke in becoming number one in both Europe and the States is the icing on the cake after a fabulous season," he said.

Hardly surprisingly, McIlroy finished his 2012 campaign on a triumphant note when he won the European Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship by two shots in Dubai last month.

"I didn't want the year to just tail off, I wanted to end it in real style," he said after spectacularly making birdies on the last five holes to close with a 66.

While the richly talented McIlroy is a gifted shot-maker, left-hander Watson delivered the 'blow' of the year with a miraculous escape from pine straw to win the Masters in a playoff with South African Louis Oosthuizen in April.

On the second extra hole, the long-hitting American ended up well right and deep in the tree line off the tee from where he had a narrow avenue to the green.

STUNNING HOOK

Undaunted, Watson struck a stunning hook off the pine straw with a gap wedge, his ball bending 40 yards in the air to settle 10 feet from the pin before he claimed his first major victory with a two-putt par.

"I got in these trees and hit a crazy shot," said Watson, a self-taught golfer who learned the game by hitting wiffle balls around his house. "I just hooked it up there and somehow it nestled close to the hole."

In June, Watson's good friend and fellow American Simpson clinched his first major title with a nerve-jangling one-shot victory at the U.S. Open after overhauling overnight leaders Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell.

The following month, 42-year-old South African Els won the British Open at Royal Lytham by one stroke from Adam Scott after the Australian agonisingly bogeyed the last four holes.

Unquestionably the greatest comeback of the year, and perhaps of all time in golf, came at the Ryder Cup in September when Europe overhauled a deficit of 10-6 going into the final day to beat the United States by 14-1/2 points to 13-1/2.

Inspired by the spirit of the late Seve Ballesteros, Europe sent out their best players early and rode a wave of blue numbers to retain the trophy when Germany's Martin Kaymer defeated Steve Stricker one up.

"Seve will always be present with this team," a teary-eyed European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said of his fellow Spaniard, friend and mentor. "He was a big factor for this event, for the European side."

That same month, South Korean Shin Ji-yai romped to a nine-stroke victory at the Women's British Open at Royal Liverpool in England to complete a stunning Asian sweep of the year's four women's majors.

Shin's compatriot Yoo Sun-young won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in a playoff at Rancho Mirage in April and Choi Na-yeon, also of South Korea, claimed her first major title by four shots at the U.S. Women's Open in Kohler, Wisconsin in July.

The Fear is Gone: My PC Is My Next-Gen Console

The Fear is Gone: My PC Is My Next-Gen ConsoleThere was a moment on Sunday when I thought the PC gamers had been hiding something from me.

They'd been telling me that PC gaming wasn't the complicated hobby that it used to be, that it was more streamlined and less of a pain. They'd told me that I didn't need to be an auto mechanic if I didn't want to be, that I could just drive without ever flipping up the hood.

And yet there I was trying to be a PC gamer on Sunday and having a tough time of it. I was feeling stymied yet again. I was having what I now hope are my last doubts, because today I've just about run out of excuses to fear PC gaming. And I'm beginning to wonder what the point of a gaming console is in these modern times of December 2012.

My problem on Sunday was maddeningly simple. I'd plugged my computer?a gaming laptop (yes, yes, I know)?into my surround sound system, which was plugged into my TV. And? the image of my computer's desktop on my TV was cropped. I could barely see Windows' bottom toolbar. In X-Com Enemy Unknown I couldn't read the full names of my troops. In Far Cry 3 my peripheral vision was hemmed in.

This problem shouldn't have existed, I thought.

What's on my computer screen should have been on my TV screen. My computer was plugged into my TV set-up through one simple HDMI wire. If this was a console, it would have just worked.

You not only can't tell me that my consoles are better than my PC; you can't tell me that the concept of a gaming console has much on the PC any more. Unless we're talking about price.

I started Googling to find a solution. I Tweeted about my problem. I called colleague Kirk Hamilton. And what do you know? A lot of people seemed to know about this. A lot of people seemed to have the same problem. A lot of people seemed to know that, yeah, PC gaming still has weird issues that turn things that should work into conundrums that force you to consider, oh, maybe I'll just play this game without being able to see all of it.

I felt tricked. PC gaming, I feared, was as much a hassle as ever.

My problem on Sunday was an echo of my problems with PC gaming of old. In the late 90s and early 2000s, the computers I had were almost immediately obsolete. I'd go to the store and read far too much fine print on the spines of game boxes. Sure, I had a PC, but it didn't mean I could play the PC games I wanted to play. I hated this. I was in college and then just out of college and couldn't afford to keep up with ever-changing standards for graphics cards, sound cards and whatever else. My drivers never seemed to be up to date and I hated the hassle of trying to figure out how to update them or what to do when even updating them didn't seem to enable me to run games on computers that should have been able to run them.

Other than to play the occasional indie, I bailed out of PC gaming for many years. I returned this past summer.

In September, I got myself a gaming laptop (yes, yes, I know, but it's a powerful one). I installed Steam and started downloading games through my press account. These games started updating themselves, snatching whatever files they needed, installing Direct X and god knows what else. I was trusting Steam and it was making my return to PC gaming a cinch.

Then the fall came and I reverted to playing games on consoles. I played some Xbox 360 and some PlayStation 3. I rediscovered my 3DS and spent a lot of time on the Wii U.

At an event for BioShock Infinite just two weeks ago, I was given the chance to play the first four hours of the game on PS3, Xbox 360 or PC. A PR person there was nudging me toward PC. I figured I'd play the game on something I was more familiar with, more comfortable with. I'd like to play it on console, I said. That's when I realized that the anxiety was creeping back.

The Fear is Gone: My PC Is My Next-Gen Console So, since then, I've tried playing games on my PC. I plugged the thing into my TV to even try Steam's Big Picture mode and more or less turn my gaming laptop into a glorified console. This would be my return to PC gaming via the shallow end of the pool. I'd play it safe by playing games in a manner I've played them so often before: on my TV, controller in my hands.

I was loving it.

I was beginning to doubt that I'd care much about console gaming again, because, well, I'll get to all of my revelations and excitement about PC gaming in a moment.

Let me tell you how the Sunday problem was resolved. The folks on Twitter and Kirk Hamilton were only able to guess solutions. Check your NVidia control panel? Tried that. The "display" options aren't in there, for some reason. Maybe it's the Bose surround system? Nope. I saw the same cropped display when I plugged directly into the TV. Maybe it's your TV? Yeah, it was the TV. It was "overscanning" my PC's video signal, whatever that means. I had to tell it to stop doing that. I then shared that advice:

Problem solved. Xcom and Far Cry 3 have looked wonderfully un-cropped since then.

And that brings me to a tune that I didn't expect to be singing when 2012 began. It goes like this:

  • PC gaming makes my consoles look like a joke. This isn't because Far Cry 3 or some other game looks so much better on my PC, but because the interconnectedness of modern games feels so much more appropriate for a system like the PC. I didn't expect I'd ever say this, but?
  • I'm finding that PC gaming is giving me more peace of mind as a gamer. The inevitable bugginess of modern games is patched immediately on PC, not left in some long certification queue by a console creator. By gaming on PC, I feel a step closer to the makers of the game; I don't feel the intermediating influence or obstruction of a Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. And I feel I have access to a suite of features?mod support among them?that the developers actually considered part of the game's complete experience. I also feel like I'm no longer unable to get to some of the most interesting and unexpected games being made.
  • I don't mind peeking under the hood a little. I'm not completely comfortable with worrying about whether I should keep my "Vegetation" on "Very High" or my "Geometry" on "Ultra," but if I have to spend a half an hour on a Sunday monkeying with my TV in order to get these games running on a TV and another 10 minutes finding the Windows setting that spits my game audio out in 5.1, it's worth it, because?
  • PC gaming is making my life easier. Whatever streamlining of my gaming life that the Nintendo 64 or PS2 gave me back of the day is now being trumped by a single device that is holding a couple dozen games I'm excited to play (no discs!), that's updating them constantly (man, Steam's great, huh?) and that, thanks to Big Picture, lets them run just fine on my TV but can also run them on a laptop if I don't feel like using the TV or the TV is being used by someone else (shades of the Wii U!). Caveat: Uplay on PC does indeed seem kind of dumb.

Do I sound born again?

Do I have the zealotry of the prodigal son re-converted?

I suspect I might be blind to the pitfalls ahead of me. I figure that my gaming laptop won't keep pace with seven years' worth of ever-improving games the way my Xbox 360 has. I am sure there will be a moment when I again yearn for a Microsoft or Sony to slow down the rate of patching on a new game. Right now, however, you can't convince me that a 100-friend-limited Xbox 360 that requires me to swap discs almost any time I want to play a major new game and that won't allow a single mod is giving me a better gaming set-up in my living room than my PC. You can argue that something unique might be going on in the Wii U, since it is built for two-screen gaming, but you can't tell me that the PlayStation 3 has anything on my PC other than a batch of very cool Sony-published games.

You not only can't tell me that my consoles are better than my PC; you can't tell me that the concept of a gaming console has much on the PC any more. Unless we're talking about price. I did pay $1700 for my PC. But then again, I bought a laptop. Yes, yes, I know.

Last night, I merrily played some games on my TV using a standard game controller. A console wasn't even involved. I finally have no problem with that.

As 2012 fades, my fear of PC gaming is gone. Did you hear about those next-gen consoles? I think I have one. Had it since September.

NFL Playoff Scenarios, Week 16: Bengals-Steelers a monster in AFC

Andy Dalton and Ben Roethlisberger will meet with a likely playoff berth on the line this week. (Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE)

Andy Dalton and Ben Roethlisberger will meet with a likely playoff berth on the line this week. (Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE)

The AFC playoff race, thanks to the Jets dropping from sight with a putrid loss Monday night in Tennessee, has some clarity. Miami still has an extreme long-shot chance to sneak into the field, but we?re really down to seven teams for six slots ? with four (Houston, Denver, New England and Baltimore) already making playoff plans.

If the Colts can sidestep a letdown in Kansas City this week, most of the mystery in the AFC revolves around the North division. Will Pittsburgh or Cincinnati grab the final wild-card spot? Can Baltimore hold on to first place?

We may know those answers as soon as Sunday, if Cincinnati and Baltimore win.

As for the NFC ? bedlam.

Three berths have been claimed there, by Atlanta, San Francisco and Green Bay, but nary a team knows which seed it will be come playoff time, and nine teams still have a shot at that final trio of spots.

Which teams have the best shots at joining the postseason party? This week?s playoff picture picks through everything that?s up for grabs:

* means team has clinched a playoff spot.

AFC

Texans?No. 1 seed: Houston Texans (12-2)* ? vs. Vikings (8-6), at Colts (9-5)

The Texans clinched the AFC South last week and can wrap up the conference?s No. 1 seed by winning either of their final two games. Losses by both the Broncos and Patriots would get the job done, too. Houston can only fall out of first-round bye position if it finishes 0-2 and both the Broncos and Patriots finish 2-0. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Broncos No. 2 seed: Denver Broncos (11-3)* ? vs. Browns (5-9), vs. Chiefs (2-12)

The Broncos overtook the Patriots in the first-round bye race, thanks to San Francisco?s win over New England. A Broncos win coupled with a Patriots loss or tie would give Denver a week off to open the playoffs (a Denver tie plus New England loss would do the job as well). Denver lost to Houston earlier this season, so the Broncos must finish one game up on the Texans to claim the AFC?s top seed. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Patriots No. 3 seed: New England Patriots (10-4)* ? at Jaguars (2-12), vs. Dolphins (6-8)

The Patriots will not know their final playoff seeding until Week 17. As the AFC East division champs, they?re guaranteed to be somewhere between No. 1 and No. 4. But because New England beat Denver and Houston but lost to Baltimore this season, there remains a lot of wiggle room. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Ravens?No. 4 seed: Baltimore Ravens (9-5)* ?vs. Giants (8-6), at Bengals (8-6)

Last week, Baltimore became the fourth AFC team to claim a playoff berth, despite a loss. The Ravens can clinch the AFC North in Week 16 with a win (or with a tie and Cincinnati loss/tie), but a loss could leave them needing a victory next Sunday to fend off the Bengals and Steelers. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Colts No. 5 seed: Indianapolis Colts (9-5) ? at Chiefs (2-12), vs. Texans (12-2)

The Colts blew their chance at an AFC South championship by losing in Houston last week, so the focus now is on getting into the playoffs. A win or tie against the 2-12 Chiefs would get the job done (as would losses or ties from both Pittsburgh and New York). Getting that victory also would lock the Colts into the No. 5 seed ? Indianapolis has the tiebreaker edge over Cincinnati. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 9.5

Bengals No. 6 seed: Cincinnati Bengals (8-6) ? at Steelers (7-7), vs. Ravens (9-5)

The Bengals can punch their postseason ticket in Week 16 if they win. Cincinnati also could still swipe the AFC North with a 2-0 finish and 0-2 finish from Baltimore, both of which would require a Week 17 Bengals win over the Ravens. A loss in Pittsburgh would be a devastating blow for the Bengals ? they would need a win over Baltimore and a Cleveland upset of Pittsburgh. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 6

Steelers Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7) ? vs. Bengals (8-6), vs. Browns (5-9)

The Steelers? situation is simple: win out and they?re in ? and in as division champs if they, the Bengals and Ravens all finish at 9-7. The Steelers would be eliminated with a Week 16 loss; they could finish 1-1 with a Week 17 loss and sneak in at 8-8, but only if the Bengals also lose in Week 17. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 6

Still alive: Dolphins (6-8)

Eliminated: Jets (6-8), Browns (5-9), Chargers (5-9), Bills (5-9), Titans (5-9), Raiders (4-10), Jaguars (2-12), Chiefs (2-12)

NFC

Falcons No. 1 seed: Atlanta Falcons (12-2)* ? at Lions (4-10), vs. Buccaneers (6-8)

One Falcons win or losses by both San Francisco and Green Bay would secure the NFC?s No. 1 seed for Atlanta. A Packers loss would lock up a first-round bye for the Falcons, regardless of their outcome in Detroit ? and there is no scenario that would prevent Atlanta from heading to Week 17 in control of its destiny. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

49ers No. 2 seed: San Francisco 49ers (10-3-1)* ? at Seahawks (9-5), vs. Cardinals (5-9)

The 49ers have a playoff berth in their back pockets now, but they could go one step further and claim the NFC West by knocking off (or tying) Seattle. A win plus a Green Bay loss or tie would pen the 49ers into a first-round bye. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Packers No. 3 seed: Green Bay Packers (10-4)* ? vs. Titans (4-9), at Vikings (8-6)

The NFC North race is over, so the Packers can now focus their attention on a first-round bye. They?ll need a loss by San Francisco or two losses by Atlanta to have a chance though. A Green Bay win over Tennessee would lock the NFC East champion into the No. 4 seed ? if the Packers finished 10-6, either the Redskins or Giants could leapfrog them for the No. 3 spot. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 10

Redskins No. 4 seed: Washington Redskins (8-6) ? at Eagles (4-10), vs. Cowboys (8-6)

Washington can clinch a playoff spot with losses by the Giants, Vikings and Bears. Save that, the Redskins will have to wait until Week 17 to get the job done. They cannot be eliminated from playoff contention this week, so their game with Dallas in Week 17 will loom enormous, no matter how the Redskins? trip to Philadelphia goes. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 7

Seahawks No. 5 seed: Seattle Seahawks (9-5) ? vs. 49ers (10-3-1), vs. Rams (6-7-1)

Seattle would join the playoff party officially by beating San Francisco, which also would keep the NFC West undecided heading into Week 17. The Seahawks could clinch a berth with a loss too, but that path would require losses from Washington, Minnesota and Chicago. There are a bunch of Week 16 scenarios in which Seattle could tie San Francisco and clinch, but we?ll worry about those if another NFC West deadlock occurs. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 7.5

VikingsNo. 6 seed: Minnesota Vikings (8-6) ? at Texans (12-2), vs. Packers (10-4)

Minnesota cannot clinch a wild-card spot in Week 16 ? and, because of the NFL?s tiebreaker rules, can only stay in this sixth position heading to Week 17 with either: a) a win plus losses by two of the NFC East teams in contention (Washington, Dallas, New York); or b) a loss plus matching losses from all three NFC East teams and the Bears. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 4

Bears Chicago Bears (8-6) ? at Cardinals (5-9), at Lions (4-10)

Like the Vikings, Chicago cannot clinch a playoff spot in Week 16. In fact, the Bears? only shot at controlling their destiny in Week 17 is if they beat Arizona and the Vikings plus either the Giants or Redskins lose. The Bears could be eliminated from the race with a loss plus: a) a Minnesota win; b) wins by the Giants and Redskins. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 4.5

Cowboys Dallas Cowboys (8-6) ? vs. Saints (6-8), at Redskins (8-6)

The Cowboys are the lone NFC East team still alive that cannot clinch a spot in Week 16. But ? if Dallas wins its last two, it would win the division. The Cowboys also cannot be eliminated this weekend so they could drop Sunday?s game to New Orleans and take a slim shot to Week 17. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 5.5

Giants New York Giants (8-6) ? at Ravens (9-5), vs. Eagles (4-10)

The Giants have the most wildly fluctuating situation of the NFC East teams. They can clinch a playoff berth Sunday with a win plus losses by the Redskins, Cowboys, Vikings and Bears. But they also could be eliminated if they lose and the Redskins, Cowboys and Seahawks all win (Seattle could tie and bounce New York in that scenario as well). The defending champions, despite being in third place in the NFC East and ninth in the conference, are in if they finish 10-6. Likelihood of making the playoffs (out of 10): 5

Still alive: Rams (6-7-1), Saints (6-8),

Eliminated: Buccaneers (6-8), Panthers (5-9), Cardinals (5-9), Lions (4-10), Eagles (4-10)

Zuma was accused of taking a 500,000-rand bribe to protect a French arms company from a government probe into corruption. The corruption investigation centered around a 1999 deal for South Africa to buy ships, submarines, helicopters, jets and other weaponry from European and South African firms.

?2005: Fired as deputy president, but remains deputy president of the ANC under Mbeki, after being implicated in corruption trial of close friend and financial adviser Schabir Shaik. Later that year, prosecutors say they will charge Zuma with two counts of corruption.

?2006: Judge strikes Zuma's corruption case off the roll because the prosecution is not ready. That same year, Zuma is acquitted of raping an HIV-positive family friend, although his confession that he took a shower to prevent the risk of AIDS earned him ridicule.

?2007: Zuma beats Mbeki in ANC leadership race. Within days, Zuma is indicted on corruption charges.

?2008: Judge dismisses corruption case on procedural grounds in ruling that raises possibility of political meddling in the case. ANC responds by firing Mbeki as the nation's president, replacing him with Kgalema Motlanthe, seen as a caretaker until Zuma can take over.

?Early 2009: South Africa's second-highest court rules in favor of prosecutors' appeal, clearing way for new corruption trial against Zuma. However, nation's top prosecutors, acknowledging case had been tainted by political meddling, drop corruption charges and say they won't be refiled, though they insist case is solid.

?April 22, 2009: Zuma's ANC party sweeps parliamentary elections.

?May 6, 2009: South Africa's Parliament elects Zuma as the country's next president.

?May 9, 2009: Zuma sworn in as president of South Africa.

?June-July 2010: South Africa hosts successful World Cup, which Zuma said showed nation's ability to stand on world stage and be "united in our diversity."

?May: An art gallery shows "The Spear," a painting of Zuma with his genitals exposed. The ANC demands the painting be removed and vandals later deface it.

?August: Police officers open fire on striking miners, killing 34 in the worst violent attack by state security forces against protesters since the end of apartheid. Zuma faces criticism for his response and the ANC is accused of ignoring the poor they should represent.

?December: ANC holds its convention in Mangaung to pick its leader for the next five years, overwhelming re-electing Zuma over Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Switched On: The roads to home automation

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Switched On The Roads to Home Automation

At a dinner event several years ago, a former editor-in-chief of a major computing trade magazine told attendees that his first published article was about home automation. That article ran back in 1979 -- just two years after the debut of the Apple II and two years before the introduction of the IBM PC.

Indeed, in its early days, home automation, like the PC, was confined to hobbyists more concerned with being able to do things rather than their practical value. However, the PC proved itself first in business and then with games, word processing and the consumer web as the internet grew. Meanwhile, home automation has largely remained the province of the very wealthy and corporations. Indeed, we're still likely many years away from all of us having smart homes, but there are signs of that future approaching and putting the squeeze on today's high-end installations both from above and below.

DIY

One reason why home automation has been so challenging for the non-technical has been the confusing array of different wired and wireless standards. Take lighting. At least three major wireless protocols -- INSTEON, ZigBee and Z-Wave -- vie for adoption in wall switches for lighting. And even if you pick one, it's not every consumer who is comfortable working behind the wall plate.

But recently we've seen encroachments from two of the most popular wireless networks: WiFi and Bluetooth. In lighting, for instance, we've seen the development of light bulbs that can not only be turned on and off (and dimmed) via WiFi, but also change color -- from companies as diverse as lighting giant Philips and Kickstarter campaigner LIFX. WiFi has been the first radio standard supported by connected thermostat startup Nest. And now door locks such as Lockitron and remote doorbells like DoorBot are planning to work together to enable unmanaged remote monitoring and unlocking of homes.

DNP Switched On The Roads to Home Automation

WiFi makes sense for products that have access to a permanent power source. For sensors expected to last months or a year on batteries, though, such as those used in security applications like window openings and motion detection, Bluetooth Smart is developing into a competitor to other low-power radios. It has the advantage of already being built into virtually every smartphone, a device that will invariably be used to control homes, particularly remotely.

Another way around the longstanding standards morass has been to simply support multiple ones. Home improvement chain Lowe's, for example, now offers two home automation sets under the Iris brand. The Safe and Secure kit focuses on security monitoring while the Comfort and Control Kit centers on energy management. Both cost $179 (or are bundled together in a Smart kit for $299) and both mix and match ZigBee and Z-Wave components.

Installed

First, home automation is rapidly becoming tied into wireless data and broadband.

But while the DIY model might be getting simpler, the real push in home automation in 2013 and beyond is coming from service providers looking past the "triple play" of voice, video and (mobile) broadband. Security companies such as Vivint and ADT have been pushing home automation as an outgrowth of their security businesses with the panels acting as hubs for Z-Wave components.

The market is also attracting the attention of service provider heavyweights such as Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and others. First, home automation is rapidly becoming tied into wireless data and broadband. Got an alert on your phone that someone is at the door? Perhaps you want to peek in via remote camera for a quick chat with whoever is there?

Second, it is one of an emerging breed of consumer subscription-based services like health monitoring and payments that may not be universal for some time, but which are supplementing today's slow-growth or declining markets such as pay TV and VoIP. These services may not be adopted as widely as, say, cellular service, but rather they represent a new tier of services built on top of broadband.

Beyond the House

"Home automation" has always been, at best, an incomplete description of what are sometimes now called smart buildings. Indeed, a lot of so-called home automation installations have taken place in small businesses and a lot of the actions are done manually and not really automatically. In addition, many people's homes are apartments -- too small to justify the kinds of elaborate, multi-room systems facilitated by advanced, low-power mesh networks.

One opportunity to increase the adoption of home automation is to offer more basic capabilities to people who live in smaller dwellings. An option on the market today comes from SimpliSafe, an inexpensive, but monitored system that costs only $15 per month. If companies with tens of millions of customers such as telcos or cable companies could tack even that small premium on to their monthly fees, it would represent a substantial revenue boost.

Advice for holiday decorating around adventurous pets | Offbeat Home

Let's see? if I pull here, I think I can bring this whole bitch down. ? by Lil Shepherd, used under Creative Commons license.

Do Homies have any suggestions for pet-friendly holiday or winter decorations? I was looking online for some inspiration, but all I could think was? 1. my dog will eat that, 2. my cat will eat that, or 3. my cat will knock that on the floor, and then my dog will eat it.

Most pet owners are aware that tinsel and poinsettias can make animals sick, but if you have adventurous pets like I do, even normal decorations can pose a hazard.

Any suggestions for pet-proof decorations? How do you attach ornaments to a tree or garland so that a cat can't remove them? Thank you! -Jane

We profiled the kitty-proof garland idea last week. So that's about all we have as far as advice on this topic goes (seriously, I'm lucky in that my pets don't care at all about the tree or ornaments). What other awesome pet-proof holiday decor ideas have YOU come up with?

"Hobbit" film sets December record in U.S., Canada debut

(Reuters) - "The Hobbit" brought home a big box office treasure over the weekend, setting a December movie record with $84.77 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales as legions of fans turned out for the long-awaited big-screen return to Middle Earth.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" also rung up sales of $138.2 million in international markets. Global receipts for the prequel to the smash "Lord of the Rings" trilogy stood at $222.97 million through Sunday, distributor Warner Bros. said.

The current projection for the total box office take in 2012 is $10.8 billion, according to an estimate from Hollywood.com, which would beat the $10.6 billion record in 2009.

The 3D "Hobbit" directed by Oscar-winning "Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson is the first of three films based on a 1937 classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Warner Bros. is aiming to build on the success of the "Rings" series, one of Hollywood's biggest franchises with $2.9 billion in global ticket sales.

The "Lord of the Rings" movies debuted in theaters from 2001 to 2003. After that, production on "The Hobbit" ran into delays, leaving fans waiting a decade for another look at the fantasy story of dwarves, wizards and elves.

The opening weekend "Hobbit" sales proved interest remained high. North American (U.S. and Canadian) receipts toppled the old record for December set by Will Smith sci-fi flick "I Am Legend," which pulled in $77.2 million when it debuted in 2007.

"The best we were hoping for was to reach or exceed the $77 million set by that movie and we did it by quite a lot. It was all good and we're very happy about it," said Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros.

"You have to assume that by the time this first week is over we are going to have around $110 million in the bank before the holiday even starts," he added.

The new film follows the epic journey of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, as he travels through the treacherous Middle Earth with a band of dwarves to steal treasures from the dragon Smaug.

The movie also stars Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch, while Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood reprise their "Rings" roles.

Opening-weekend audiences embraced "The Hobbit," awarding an "A" grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore. Critics had a mixed response to the nearly three-hour film. Sixty-five percent of reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website recommended the movie, although some objected to Jackson's decision to shoot it using a 48-frames-per-second format rather than the usual 24.

SOME VIEWERS NAUSEOUS

The faster frame rate delivers clearer pictures, but some critics called the format cartoonish and jarring. Some fans at early screenings in New Zealand complained it made them feel nauseous and dizzy, according to The New Zealand Herald. Only a fraction of theaters showed the film in the new format.

The next two "Hobbit" movies are schedules to reach theaters in December 2013 and July 2014. The films were financed by MGM and Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema unit for an estimated $500 million.

"The Hobbit" took a bumpy, years-long journey to the big screen that included two directors and a lawsuit. Jackson made the "Rings" trilogy when producers could not get "The Hobbit" rights that were held by MGM's United Artists unit.

Guillermo del Toro was first hired to direct "The Hobbit" but he left the project when financial woes at MGM caused delays. The movie went into production only after Jackson settled a lawsuit against New Line in a dispute over profits from the "Rings" films.

"The Hobbit" was the only new nationwide release over the weekend. The rest of the top five were films that have been playing for weeks.

In second place was the animated family film "Rise of the Guardians" with $7.4 million, followed by historical drama "Lincoln" starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the revered U.S. president, which grabbed $7.2 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates.

James Bond movie "Skyfall" landed in fourth place with $7 million.

Next on the box office chart was "Life of Pi," which captured $5.4 million. Teen vampire tale "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" earned $5.17 million.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. released "The Hobbit." "Lincoln" was produced by Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Co. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Skyfall." Dreamworks Animation distributed "Rise of the Guardians," which was released by Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures. Summit Entertainment, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment, released "Breaking Dawn."

Self Improvement Times: Time Management Strategies - Overcome ...

Time management strategies must address your personal challenges to be truly effective. Countering your Time Gremlins wins you still more time. Isn't it a delicious feeling to break free of them?

They are, of course, a part of you, and can only be opposed when you take the time to get to know them. They grow out of your history, your values conflicts and unfinished business. Yet they can most certainly be overcome. I think it's great news that your Time Gremlins are completely dependent upon you in order to survive. They can only thrive by using your energy. And they do so by hitchhiking rides on your plans, trying to scoot under your radar.

Granted, these Time Gremlins are clever... But believe me, you can be smarter! It's best to take them on one at a time, so I'll start with one of the most widespread ones.

The People Pleaser Gremlin

The People Pleaser Gremlin wheedles you into empowering others. So it's most helpful to understand your motivation in undermining yourself this way.

* Do you doubt your ability to proceed independently?

* Do you try to win people's favor in the hope of receiving some reward?

These are common concerns. Yet when you value others' priorities over your own, you forfeit your ability to plan effectively.

Apply The Antidote for the People Pleaser Gremlin.

To apply the antidote to the People Pleaser Gremlin, ask yourself these questions. Then jot down each answer in a sentence or two:

1. What is the worst thing that can realistically happen if you meet this challenge?

2. When you put yourself first, what new challenges will you face?

3. In what way will meeting these new challenges help you grow?

4. How will you become more clearly defined?

5. What is your very first step that you can perform in a single sitting?

Take that all-important first step as soon as you possibly can! Remember that courage grows with action. And Time Gremlins lose their power as soon as you stop believing in their distorted messages.

You will receive a number of additional benefits when you develop more self-reference:

Your ability to prioritize will increase, because you'll be paying more attention to yourself and less attention to others. Your ability to follow through on your priorities will improve, too, because you won't be re-routed by others' demands. Interestingly, you will find people respect you more and trust you more, because they will sense your growing authenticity. Furthermore, you won't be as likely to overbook yourself and then fail to follow through.

One of the most profound discoveries about taking back your power from your Time Gremlins is that you not only have more time - you also have more of yourself.

So what is your next step to truly take your power over your time into your own hands?

Secret military space plane set to launch

The secretive U.S. Air Force X-37B robotic space plane has been cleared to lift off Tuesday.

The X-37B vehicle and its cargo bay packed with a classified payload is set to make the third mission of the program. Also called Orbital Test Vehicle-3, or OTV-3, the unpiloted craft is slated to be hurled into Earth orbit by an Atlas 5 rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) at 1:03 p.m. EST.

There's an interesting angle to the upcoming mission. This third flight will use the same X-37B spacecraft that flew the first test flight, the OTV-1 mission, in 2010.

That maiden voyage of the miniature space plane lasted a little over 224 days, orbiting Earth from April 22, 2010 to Dec. 3 of that year, and finally landing on autopilot at a specially prepared runway at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. [ Photos: U.S. Military's X-37B Space Plane ]

A different X-37B vehicle made a similar Vandenberg touchdown this past June 16, after staying in orbit 469 days on its OTV-2 mission.

Accident investigation
The OTV-3 flight had been delayed for several months due to an accident investigation board looking into why a Delta 4 rocket's RL-10B-2 upper stage engine did not perform as expected on Oct. 4 during a launch that successfully orbited a Global Positioning System 2F-3 satellite.

The Atlas 5 that will hurl the OTV-3 into Earth orbit uses a different model of the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL-10 engine. However, per standard processes, the Air Force reviews all flight data to determine readiness to press forward with the next liftoff.

According to launch service provider United Launch Alliance (ULA), which makes the Atlas 5 and Delta 4, a thorough flight clearance process was executed and all "credible crossover implications" from the Delta anomaly to the OTV-3 Atlas vehicle and engine system have been thoroughly addressed and mitigated. That work culminated in the flight clearance decision for the OTV-3 launch. The investigation into the Delta rocket flight data anomaly continues.

Flight clearance
The accident investigation board concluded that a fuel leak occurred in a specific area of the interior of the thrust chamber, and that this leak started during the first engine start sequence during the October launch.

The anomaly investigation involves senior industry technical advisers, along with Air Force and NASA customers, explained Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president of mission operations, on the ULA website.

"We thank the OTV customer for their patience and participation throughout the flight clearance process for this important mission," Sponnick said.

ULA is a 50-50 joint venture owned by Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Co.

Space test platform
The X-37B program is being run by the U.S. Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office. The two space planes in the fleet ? which are 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed ? were built by Boeing Government Space Systems.

The Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office has a mission of expediting the development and fielding of select Department of Defense combat support and weapon systems by leveraging defense-wide technology development efforts and existing operational capabilities.

    3. Save the Earth: Hit asteroid with spaceship
    4. Superb Geminid meteor shower coming up

According to an Air Force fact sheet, the Rapid Capabilities Office is working on the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle "to demonstrate a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the United States Air Force."

While both previous X-37B missions touched down at Vandenberg, the Air Force has been reviewing the prospect of landing future flights at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, next door to the Cape Canaveral launch site. Returning the robotic space plane to the KSC landing strip ? which was used by NASA's now-retired space shuttle fleet ? would lower costs, because the vehicle wouldn't have to be transported back from California to Florida after each mission.

U.S. military's secret mini-shuttle lifts off from Florida

Tue Dec 11, 2012 7:50pm EST

(Reuters) - An unmanned Atlas 5 rocket carrying a small robotic space shuttle lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Tuesday for the third flight in a classified military test program.

The 196-foot (60-meter) rocket blasted off at 1:03 p.m. ET (1603 GMT) carrying the military's original X-37B experimental space plane, also known as an Orbital Test Vehicle, or OTV.

The unmanned, reusable space shuttle, one of two operated by the U.S. Air Force, spent 224 days circling Earth during its debut mission in 2010. A sister ship blasted off in 2011 and landed itself after 469 days in space, completing the second orbital test flight.

The military is not saying how long the third X-37B mission will last, nor what the vehicle will be doing in orbit.

"The focus of the program remains on testing vehicle capabilities and proving the utility and cost-effectiveness of a reusable spacecraft," Air Force spokeswoman Tracy Bunko wrote in an email to Reuters.

While launching from Florida, the military has been landing the robotic space planes at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The agency is considering landing and refurbishing its X-37B spaceships at NASA and Air Force bases in Florida, which has been courting new customers since the retirement of NASA's space shuttles last year.

"We are investigating the possibility of using the former shuttle infrastructure for X-37B OTV landing operations and are looking into consolidating landing, refurbishment and launch operations at Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in an effort to save money," Bunko wrote.

"Those investigations are in an early state, and any specifics will not be known for some time," she added.

The vehicles, which were built by Boeing, are about one-fourth the size of a NASA shuttle and use solar panels to generate power, rather than chemical fuel cells that limited the space shuttles' time in orbit.

Neither NASA nor the Air Force has plans to upgrade the X-37B to carry people.

The OTV-3 flight had been delayed several months pending the results of an investigation into an upper-stage engine problem during an October 4 Delta 4 flight to put a Global Positioning System satellite into orbit.

The Delta 4 upper-stage is similar to one used on Atlas rockets. Both vehicles are built and flown by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Was the sauropod dinosaurs' large size due to plant food? Scientists argue old idea still has legs

Dec. 12, 2012 ? The long necked sauropod dinosaurs were the largest land animals ever to walk the Earth -- but why were they so large? A decade ago, a team of plant ecologists from South Africa suggested that this was due to the nature of the plant food they ate. However, these ideas have fallen out of favour with many dinosaur researchers. Now Liverpool John Moores University's (LJMU's) Dr David Wilkinson and Professor Graeme Ruxton of University of St Andrews, Scotland, argue that this idea still has legs.

The results have been published in the journal Functional Ecology published by the British Ecological Society this month. They suggest that this mistake happened because some scientists confused two different issues in thinking about this problem; namely how much energy is in the plant with how much nitrogen is in the plant -- the South African ideas were based on nitrogen content not the total energy in the plant food.

Dr Wilkinson and Professor Ruxton now argue that this South African idea about long necked sauropod dinosaurs being large based on the nature of the plant food they ate, is still a contender for explaining their size. As well as arguing that these ideas have been prematurely discarded the new work goes on the further develop this theory.

Dr David M Wilkinson who is an ecologist from the LJMU School of Natural Sciences and Psychology explains: "This new study makes a first attempt to calculate in more detail the implications of this idea. It suggests that it may have been to the advantage of young sauropods trying to get enough nitrogen to have a metabolism rather like modern mammals, but that this would have been impossible for the adults because of the danger of such large animals overheating from all the heat that such a metabolism would have produced."

"Alternatively -- or in addition -- it would also have been potentially beneficial for the young to be carnivorous, as this would also have helped them access more nitrogen. The large adults plausibly used their size to help process large amounts of plant food to access enough scarce nitrogen, as suggested in the original 2002 study. However this would potentially have caused them to have to take in more energy than they needed. A mammal (and possibly also small sauropods) would get rid of this surplus as heat, but this would not be possible for a really large dinosaur. Potentially they may have laid down fat reserves instead. So one can even speculate that they may have had humps of fat rather like modern-day camels."
