15 Tips To Boost Your Energy - Retirement Homes

We expect to feel run down when battling a virus or after an especially draining week, but sometimes fatigue sticks around a little too long. Medical conditions are one cause, but a lack of energy can often be attributed to lifestyle.

Thankfully, fatigue isn?t something we have to take lying down. Here are 15 ways experts say we can boost our energy:

Clean up your sleep routine

It?s normal to feel sluggish after a restless night, but a lack of regular sleep can lead to ongoing fatigue. It may sound like an obvious place to start, but try some helpful sleep habits like going to bed and waking up at the same time and avoiding exercise and alcohol in the hours before bed. (See Wanted: more sleep for additional tips.)

Take a catnap

Even if you?re sitting at a desk, information overload can wear down your brain and body. Here?s the good news if you can?t wait until night for a refresher: studies have found that napping boosts brainpower. Even as little as 20-30 minutes can give you some benefit, though it won?t make up for a night of missed sleep.

Exercise

Do the words ?get more exercise? seem daunting? It?s hard to workout when your energy is lagging but regular exercise does boost energy. Experts therefore recommend a compromise: try small bouts of exercise such as a short walk. Just ten minutes of activity can get you started ? and you may find you?ll keep going.

Aim for a healthful diet

Our bodies don?t appreciate dramatic highs and lows in our blood sugar levels. (Ideally, we want our blood sugar levels to stay within the normal range.) Bad habits like skipping meals or drastically cutting calories can impact our energy levels.

Of course, we want the right fuel too. We don?t have to be perfect all of the time, but a balanced diet with healthy fats, lean sources of protein, fibre, fruits and vegetables gives us the vitamins and minerals we need to keep our energy levels up.

Give your power snack a makeover

It?s tempting to reach for a sugary snack when the munchies strike. However, foods high in added sugars and refined carbohydrates can cause blood sugar levels to spike and then plummet. For snacks with more staying power, experts recommend looking at protein and fibre ? like whole grain crackers with cheese or fruit with nut butter. Both protein and fibre help us feel satisfied longer and dodge that ?sugar rush?.

Cut down on caffeine

Many of us look for a caffeine fix when our reserves are dwindling, but too much of this stimulant can raise both heart rate and blood pressure and make us feel jittery. A steady stream of caffeine can actually cause fatigue.

However, you won?t want to go cold turkey with coffee, chocolate and tea ? experts say to gradually cut back instead or withdrawal could lead to further fatigue.

Top up your water bottle

Did you know dehydration can zap energy? Experts warn that sometimes we feel tired before we feel thirsty. Not sure if you?re getting enough fluids? One telling sign is the colour of your urine: dark yellow means you may need more while light yellow means you?re on track.

Meditate for a few minutes

Who says you need a block of time and a big cushion? Experts note that even a quick mental break provides some benefits. You can try a short meditation break just about anywhere ? even when you?re taking the bus to work or catching up on housework.

Find a way to reduce stress

Maybe meditation isn?t your thing, but experts repeatedly warn we need to deal with stress and anger ? both of which can be a big energy drain. Our bodies aren?t meant to live with a constant level of ?fight or flight? from work or family pressures. Laugh, talk to a friend, exercise or write in a journal. Just find a technique that works for you and use it on a regular basis.

Escape from your desk

Studies say we?re more productive and energetic at work if we pause periodically for a break ? especially if that break lets us move around and see some sun. Natural light and a little activity can give our spirits a boost and help relieve some of that workplace stress. Ideally, experts advise taking a 10 minute break each hour from repetitive tasks or sitting at a computer.

Switch up your to-do list

You can still take a mental break even if you can?t get away from your desk. Repetitive or sustained tasks can wear us down, so try switching to another task. For example, take a break from staring at a computer screen and do five minutes of tidying up or filing. Make a phone call, meet with a co-worker or pick up your mail in the mailroom.

Give your eyes a break too

Staring at a screen for hours on end can be hard on the eyes and body ? and lead to blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches and fatigue. (The condition has a name: computer vision syndrome.) Experts recommend a 20-20-20 break to give your eyes some respite: Every 20 minutes focus on something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Use some common scents

Certain smells such as lemon, orange, grapefruit and peppermint can be energizing. Some experts say the best way to enjoy them is to use a couple of drops of essential oil in an oil diffuser rather than perfumed products.

Unplug

Experts warn all that screen time we?re getting can take its toll ? like that recent study which warns mobile devices enable us to pile up hours of overtime checking emails and working off hours. Screen time before bed is especially risky because it could disrupt melatonin levels (that?s the hormone that promotes sleep.) More research is needed, but for now experts recommend turning off TVs, smart phones, computers and tablets in the hour before bedtime.

When to talk to your doctor

Healthy habits can only take us so far. Experts warn that you should talk to your doctor if you?re experiencing persistent fatigue ? especially if it?s disrupting your usual activities. Fatigue may seem like a minor symptom, but it can be a warning sign of conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart problems, depression, thyroid problems or a urinary tract infection.

Don?t be alarmed ? fatigue can also be a sign of less serious issues such as a food allergy or intolerance, or it could be a side effect of a medication you?re taking. Another common cause is a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Your body could be telling you that you need more iron, potassium or magnesium, for example.

Regardless, you?ll want to talk to a professional to help pinpoint the problem. Simple blood tests can help get at the root of your fatigue.

Yankees RHP Rafael Soriano opts out of contract

Rafael Soriano appears poised to leave the New York Yankees, and Ervin Santana is headed to Kansas City.

Soriano opted out of the final year of his $35 million, three-year contract Wednesday and will likely seek a long-term deal in free agency. The right-hander had 42 saves for the Yankees last season after longtime closer Mariano Rivera tore knee ligaments in early May.

Soriano was set to make $14 million next season and had until Wednesday to opt out. Instead, New York will pay him a $1.5 million buyout. The Yankees can make him a qualifying offer of $13.3 million before Friday's 11:59 p.m. EDT deadline and if Soriano signs with another team, they will get draft compensation.

"I'm not surprised because (agent) Scott Boras told me he was confident he could get him 15 times four (years), $60 million. If that's the case, it would be a good deal for Soriano," Yankees president Randy Levine told The Associated Press. "I hope that's what's real in the marketplace."

Soriano, who will be 33 in December, signed his hefty contract with New York before the 2011 season after notching a career-high 45 saves with Tampa Bay. He began his stint with the Yankees as a setup man, then took over as closer when Rivera was injured.

The Kansas City Royals made their first move toward shoring up their shaky rotation, acquiring Santana from the Los Angeles Angels for minor league reliever Brandon Sisk.

Santana was an All-Star in 2008 and threw a no-hitter in 2011, but struggled with the long ball this year. He allowed a major league-worst 39 homers and went 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA ? although he showed improvement in the second half of the season.

"We were able to scout Ervin during the entire year, specifically the second half," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "His August and September were really good. From a statistical standpoint, he was very good."

Moore said the Royals are paying "the majority" of Santana's $13 million deal. The Angels had exercised their $13 million option before trading the Dominican veteran and cash to the Royals.

The Royals, however, declined their $8 million club option on closer Joakim Soria after he had elbow ligament-replacement surgery and missed last season. Soria will receive a $750,000 buyout.

Even though Soria, a two-time All-Star with 160 saves over five seasons, is a free agent, both sides have expressed interest in working out a new contract.

All-Stars David Wright ($16 million) and R.A. Dickey ($5 million) had their contract options picked up by the New York Mets. General manager Sandy Alderson has said signing the two players to long-term deals is his top priority this offseason.

The wild-card Baltimore Orioles exercised their $1 million option on right-handed reliever Luis Ayala but declined an $11 million option on first baseman Mark Reynolds.

Reynolds, who hit .221 with 23 homers and 69 RBIs in 135 games, will get a $500,000 buyout, and remains under club control through the arbitration process.

The Cleveland Indians exercised their $5.75 million option on pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Also, the team declined its options on designated hitter Travis Hafner ($13 million) and starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez ($6 million), formerly known as Fausto Carmona.

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up their option on 25-year-old third baseman Pedro Alvarez ($700,000) and parted ways with catcher Rod Barajas, who had a $3.5 million option. The Pirates have another $700,000 option on Alvarez for 2014.

Pittsburgh also released reliever Hisanori Takahashi, who posted an 8.64 ERA in nine appearances.

In Toronto, the Blue Jays exercised their $3 million option on left-handed reliever Darren Oliver and signed outfielder Rajai Davis to a one-year, $2.5 million contract after declining the option on his previous two-year deal.

Davis hit .257 with 24 doubles, eight home runs, 43 RBIs and 46 stolen bases this year. The Blue Jays held a $3 million option for 2013 with a $500,000 buyout.

Why I am voting for Obama | Wives Unscripted

I?m very involved in politics. I stay informed by watching and reading various news sources. I feel it?s very important to stay informed so you can make educated choices about who you are voting for. Based on my beliefs, I identify with the Democratic party. However, I never vote my party line just because they are a Democrat. I always like to understand where someone stands on at least one of my key issues listed below.

 • Women?s rights
 • Gay marriage equality
 • Health care reform
 • Immigration reform
 • Education
 • Taxes on the middle class vs. Taxes for the wealthy

The presidential election is no exception. I have voted in every presidential election since turning 18. I even drove home from college to vote in the 2004 election because my absentee ballot never arrived. ?I waited to change my name in 2008 after getting married to make sure my vote counted. I voted in 2008 after waiting in line for over an hour to cast my vote. I felt it was my duty as an American to make sure my vote is counted. ?Every vote counts, even if you don?t think it does. In my opinion you can?t complain about any administration if you never voted in the first place.

With all of that said, I would like to outline why I feel Barack Obama will get my vote come November 6th.

Women?s Rights

I believe that women shouldn?t be paid less for the same job as men. ?Barack Obama signed the Fair Pay Act to ensure this doesn?t happen.

I strongly believe in a women?s right to choose, and that any medical decision should be between herself and her doctor to make. Barack Obama stands behind that and will not attempt to repeal Roe vs. Wade.

I also believe strongly that all?preventative?care should be covered in full by all health insurance companies. Only with?preventative?care can we catch things early enough to be treated with minimal intervention saving health insurance companies, tax payers and patients a lot of money. Obama?s health care plan requires all insurance companies to provide preventative care at no cost.

Women should have easy access to low cost birth control. I don?t necessarily agree that it needs to be fully covered by insurance companies. However, all women deserve the right to access low cost birth control. Without this, more and more unwanted pregnancies will occur forcing many American?s to make hard choices, depend on government support, or live in poverty. Obama?s health care plan requires insurance companies to provide birth control to all women.

Gay Marriage Equality

I believe that the government needs to recognize all marriages, not just those between a man and a woman. Barack Obama has already repealed Don?t Ask Don?t Tell. He also would like to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act that recognizes marriage as between one man and one woman. I will say that just because the government recognizes the marriage doesn?t mean that a religious institution needs to. The reason for this is to allow all men and women to receive all benefits that come with being married (ie, taxes, health decisions). These cannot be accomplished with civil unions.

Health Care Reform

Health Care in America is broken. We pay out the nose for coverage, only to be denied because of a pre-existing condition, or because we reached out lifetime limit. This needs to end. Health Care decisions need to be between patients and their doctors. Health Insurance Companies should not have a say in what procedures are done, or if someone can afford those procedures.

As touched upon before, there needs to be low cost access to preventative care. Only through this will potentially deadly diseases (that are completely treatable) be caught earlier to save costs all around.

Prevent companies from discriminating from patients because of pre-existing conditions. This is something I very very strongly believe in. I was born with a condition called Hydrocephalus. It is very treatable. When I was a month old, I had a shunt installed to help the excess fluid drain from my brain. I had a second surgery at age 10 to extend the shunt tubing because I had grown. But because of this diagnosis, I was denied health insurance after I reached the age to be dropped by my parents insurance. I had little choice but to pay the $600 a month insurance premium to keep any coverage (that didn?t include any co-pays or prescription costs).

Obama?s Health Insurance Plan addresses each of these issues. Is it a perfect fix, no. But he came up with a plan to help fix these problems. I would like to see the plan?tweaked?in the future to make the plan work better. I also don?t completely agree with the mandate. But then again, many states mandate insurance for cars. At some point in your life, you will need health insurance. It shouldn?t be something afforded to just those that can afford it.

Immigration Reform

I believe that illegal immigrants that were brought here as children should have a chance to become US citizens. There needs to be a process that these children can live and thrive legally in the US. I remember reading a story last spring about several high school students in Florida who were on tap to be deported from the US. Most had lived here since before they started school. One was the valedictorian of their high school and had received a scholarship for college. This was now in jeopardy because of their illegal status. This child should have a chance to stay and prosper in the US as a productive member of American society by following a citizenship process. Obama?s DREAM Act is a step towards this.

Education

Higher education should not be just a privilege for the wealthy. That was not what our country was founded on. Everyone should have a chance to go to college and continue their education. ?Student loan rates need to be kept low to allow young adults to complete their education without fear for what will happen after college. Obama made sure that Student Loan interest rates didn?t double this summer. He also made sure that monthly repayments are no more than 10% of income.

We have to make sure that our workforce is keeping up with today?s technology. ?He invested in community college to help provide career training programs. He also helped give my husband a job ;)

Taxes & The Economy

This is a huge issue and one of the big reasons I?m going to vote for Obama come November. ?I truly believe that our country would be in a much better position if we taxed everyone on a flat tax rate. But since that isn?t going to happen, making sure everyone is taxed fairly is a good start. This means that those that can afford to pay more, do. It doesn?t make sense that someone like myself is taxed at say 15% and someone who makes millions a year is only taxed at 11%. This can?t continue to happen. In order to balance the budget, we need to cut spending AND increase our tax revenue. Obama has tried his hardest to make this happen. ?However, there have been many obstacles in his way.

I also believe that corporations shouldn?t receive tax breaks for sending jobs overseas. The tax incentives should go to those companies that keep jobs here in the US. Obama has proposed this legislation and has not had the support in congress to allow it to be made into law.

These are the issues I feel are VERY important. Yes there are plenty of other issues out there. ?But I only vote for someone who agrees with me on my key issues. Those are the things that are near and dear to my heart. I would have a hard time supporting a candidate that didn?t represent my interests on the majority of those issues.

Note: ?All of the information on where Obama stands on the issues above came from?barackobama.com. I was not compensated to write this post. These are my honest opinions.

Ozone's impact on soybean yield: Reducing future losses

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? People tend to think of ozone as something in the upper atmosphere that protects Earth's surface from UV radiation. At the ground level, however, ozone is a pollutant that damages crops, particularly soybean.

Lisa Ainsworth, a University of Illinois associate professor of crop sciences and USDA Agricultural Research Service plant molecular biologist, said that establishing the exposure threshold for damage is critical to understanding the current and future impact of this pollutant.

"Most of my research is on measuring the effects of ozone on soybean, determining the mechanisms of response, and then trying to improve soybean tolerance to ozone so that we can improve soybean yields," she explained.

Ozone is highly reactive with membranes and proteins and is known to damage the human lung. It also harms plants, slowing photosynthesis and accelerating senescence. As a result, they take in and fix less carbon, reducing yield. Ainsworth said that ground level concentrations of ozone are already high enough to damage crop production.

"Ozone reacts very quickly once it enters the leaf through the stomata," she explained. "It can form other oxygen radicals and also hydrogen peroxide. Then a series of cascading reactions causes a decrease in photosynthesis, reducing stomata conductance."

The plant's response to ozone mimics a hypersensitive response to a pathogen attack. "At quite high concentrations of ozone, you can get leaf bronzing, stippling of the leaves, and necrotic spots," Ainsworth said. "At really high concentrations, you get cell death." The metabolic changes then feed forward to affect plant productivity.

Ainsworth's group conducted a two year study in 2009 and 2010 at the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment (SoyFACE) facility at the U of I South Farms. It was the first dose-response experiment to look at ozone and soybean under completely open-air conditions.

They investigated the responses of seven different soybean genotypes to eight ozone concentrations. The plants were exposed to ozone concentrations ranging from ambient levels of 38 parts per billion up to 200 parts per billion. "This is quite high, but unfortunately, those kinds of concentrations are what very polluted areas of China and India are looking at today," Ainsworth said.

The researchers found that any increase above the ambient concentration was enough to reduce seed yield: roughly half a bushel per acre for each additional part per billion.

"This is significant," Ainsworth said. "Especially considering that background concentrations of ozone today vary year to year, anywhere from about 38 to 39 parts per billion to about 62. That can be 15 bushels per acre from one year to the next that farmers are losing to ozone." The researchers compared the results of this study, which used modern genotypes, with results from experiments conducted in controlled environments in the 1980s. They found that the responses of the modern genotypes were similar to those of the older genotypes.

"Breeders haven't inadvertently bred for ozone tolerance in more modern lines," Ainsworth said. "They're still sensitive to ozone, which means that farmers are still subject to these yearly variations in ozone and are losing yield accordingly."

Potential increases in background ozone are predicted to increase soybean yield losses by 9 to 19 percent by 2030. Levels were particularly high during this year's growing season because most days were sunny and warm, and thus they were favorable for ozone formation. Peaks on many days exceeded 80 parts per billion, twice the known sensitivity threshold.

Police: Pastor of North Texas church killed

FOREST HILL, Texas (AP) ? A North Texas pastor was killed Monday by an attacker who rammed a car into a church wall, chased the pastor and beat him with an electric guitar, police said.

Police in Forest Hill, a suburb of Fort Worth, did not say why the unidentified suspect attacked the Rev. Danny Kirk Sr., the founding pastor of Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church.

The suspect, who police used a Taser to subdue, also died a short time after being taken into custody.

Forest Hill Police Chief Dan Dennis said the suspect drove his car into a church wall before noon Monday, apparently on purpose. The suspect got out of the car and began to attack the pastor in the parking lot before chasing him into the church, Dennis said. The church secretary hid and called 911, Dennis said.

Police arrived to find the suspect assaulting Kirk with an electric guitar that they believe was already inside the church, Dennis said. An officer used a Taser on the suspect, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car.

By then, Kirk had died, Dennis said. A maintenance worker who tried to help Kirk was injured and taken to an area hospital. His condition was unknown.

Dennis said the suspect was found unresponsive shortly after being detained and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Dennis said he didn't know if the suspect knew Kirk, attended the church or why he might have attacked the pastor.

Hours after the incident, hundreds of people remained outside the church, where crime-scene tape was wrapped around a small statue of Jesus near the wrecked car. Some hugged each other and cried, while others recalled Kirk as a dedicated minister who also had a bubbly personality and knew the all names of the several-hundred church members.

"He really was concerned about our souls," Montoya McNeil, a member for eight years, said as she wiped away tears. "You looked forward to being here. ... I'm not asking God why, because I know where he (Kirk) is, but we won't get those big bear hugs and those great sermons anymore."

According to former Forest Hill mayor James Gosey, Kirk started the church years ago in a strip mall before building the red-brick church.

Kirk was also an unofficial volunteer chaplain who occasionally counseled members of a local high school football team, Fort Worth school district spokesman Clint Bond said.

"Our hearts are heavy right now," said Reginald Wilson, an associate minister at the church.

Low central pressure among Hurricane Sandy?s unusual features

access Enlarge

A Perfect Storm

Hurricane Sandy, shown in this GOES-13 satellite image taken at 12:20 p.m. Eastern time October 29, has continued to gather strength as it heads directly for the mid-Atlantic region.

Credit: NOAA-NASA GOES Project

Hurricane Sandy barreled into the U.S. East Coast on October 29, bringing heavy rains, high winds and severe storm surges from the Carolinas to New England.

Sandy began its life inauspiciously the week before as ?Tropical Depression 18? in the southwestern Caribbean Sea. Warm ocean waters, combined with little wind shear that could have torn the embryonic storm apart, allowed it to strengthen into a tropical storm and then a hurricane with winds of at least 74 miles per hour. At least 65 people died as Sandy ripped across Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas.

As the massive storm skirted the southeastern states, first one trough of air pressure and then another guided it northeast and then toward the west and onshore. By this point it was transitioning from a hurricane (which gathers its strength from warm ocean waters) to an extratropical cyclone (which gathers strength from temperature gradients in the atmosphere).

No matter what you call it, Sandy is a record-breaking storm. It has already displayed the lowest central pressure ever recorded north of Cape Hatteras, N.C. As of 11 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, Sandy had a minimum central pressure of 943 millibars, breaking the record of 946 millibars from the 1938 ?Long Island Express? hurricane.

This year?s Atlantic hurricane season has been busier than normal and even busier than predicted, with 19 named storms and 10 hurricanes. The season officially closes on November 30.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan For HealthExcess sugar consumption is often the reason for several health conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Refined sugars are known to be fast-digesting carbohydrates, which are converted quickly to fat; whereas, complex carbohydrates digest slowly and provide you with a consistent source of energy. Therefore, it is important that you limit the amount of sugar in your diet. Given below is an effective sugar free diet plan.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Include Vegetables

Vegetables are excellent for those who suffer from high blood sugar as they are sugar-free. They possess high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which are beneficial for health. It is advisable that you cook vegetables at home and avoid purchasing packaged food products as they often contain added sugars.

Sugar-Free Diet Plan

Vegetables that are sugar-free include spinach, kale, collard greens, tomato, onion, asparagus, broccoli and yam. It is advisable that you include vegetables at every meal as they also contain high amounts of fibre and water, thereby preventing binge eating.

Include Meat and Dairy Products

Meat is considered an excellent food for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. This is because meat possesses no refined sugar and provides you with the essential amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals required for good health.

Chicken breast, fish, lean beef and turkey are excellent sources of animal protein that are sugar-free. Dairy products are also sugar-free and good for individuals suffering from diabetes. However, it is important that you purchase only unflavoured dairy products, which do not contain any added sugar.

Best dairy products that do contain refined sugars include yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. You could also add berries or any other fruit to yogurt for added flavour.

Include Fruits and Whole Grains

Fruits are one of the best foods for those suffering from high blood sugar as they do not contain any added sugar. Fruits are known to possess complex carbohydrates, which digest very slowly and are good for diabetics. Fruits that do not contain refined sugar include blueberries, grapes, kiwi, raspberries, strawberries, banana, mango and apricots.

Diet Plan For Health

You should avoid purchasing packaged fruit juices as they contain high amounts of added sugars. Instead, you should drink fruit juice prepared at home by juicing the whole fruit itself. Whole grains are also considered sugar-free and contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, whole grains also possess good amounts of fibre, which help in digestion. Sugar-free whole grains include oats, bran, wheat, brown rice and millet.

Include Legumes

Legumes are considered excellent for those on a sugar-free diet. This is due to the fact that legumes possess negligible amounts of refined sugar. In addition to that, they contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates and fibre, which help in regulating the levels of blood sugar and promoting smooth digestion.

Common examples of sugar-free legumes include lima beans, pinto beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas and kidney beans. If you experience bloating because of eating legumes, you should soak boiled beans in cold water for a few seconds and drop them in hot water for a few seconds.

Collaboration is key plus the GRAND Social grandparent linky ...

The GRAND Social has always been a collaboration of sorts. People add links and people read links to create an enjoyable experience for all. Without those posting, there'd be no GRAND Social. Without those reading, there'd be no GRAND Social, at least not as it's meant to be?a collaboration.

Here is another sort of collaboration, one in which commuters in the United Kingdom add notes here and there to create something beautiful, something worth sharing. A collaboration.

?

Thank you for collaborating with me today on the GRAND Social. I appreciate those who link, as well as those who read. Together we, too, are creating something beautiful, something worth sharing.

How it works:

 • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.
 • Posts shared can be an old one or a recent one, your choice. I like to link up to older posts that current readers likely haven't seen.
 • To link up, copy the direct link to the specific post you want to share, not the link to your blog's home page. Then click the blue "Click here to enter" text below and follow the directions to add your post to the list.
 • You can add up to three posts, but no duplicates, please, and none you have promoted on a previous GRAND Social linky.
 • No contests, giveaways, or Etsy sites.
 • Adding a mention at the bottom of your linked posts, such as This post has been linked to the GRAND Social linky, is appreciated. Or, you can post the GRAND Social button using the following code:

Grandma?sBriefs.com

?

 • The GRAND Social linky is open for new posts through Wednesday evening, so please come back to see those added after your first visit.
 • If you're not a blogger, you have the pleasure of being a reader. All bloggers who link up would be honored to have you click, visit, read and comment.

READERS and PARTICIPATING BLOGGERS: Please visit the posts others have linked to by clicking on the thumbnail photos. Comments are always appreciated by the bloggers whose links you visit, even if it's simply "Hey, stopping by from GRAND Social."

Space shuttle Endeavour exhibit to launch Tuesday

For more than two decades, officials at the California Science Center dreamed of showcasing a space shuttle at the Exposition Park museum.

It took a nationwide competition, a three-day cross-country flight and a harrowing 12-mile trek through the streets of Los Angeles, but on Tuesday, that dream will come true.

The free, state-run museum will open its doors to the display pavilion housing the retired orbiter Endeavour, which arrived at the Science Center about two weeks ago. The 18,000-square-foot building will showcase the museum's prized exhibit until a new air and space wing is built.??

PHOTOS: Space shuttle Endeavour rolls through the streets of L.A.

"Obviously people were excited just to see it fly over or even [get] a closer look when they could see it going down the streets, but here they get a lot more of a chance to see it," Science Center President Jeffrey Rudolph said. "People can learn a lot more about it."

There are two separate parts to the temporary set-up: the Samuel Oschin display pavilion and another exhibit detailing the space shuttle's history and ties to Southern California. The entire space shuttle fleet ? Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour and Enterprise, the test orbiter ? was assembled in Palmdale.

Museum visitors won't be able to go inside the 122-foot-long Endeavour, but they can virtually navigate the flight deck, mid-deck and payload bay by using a touch-screen display. Officials also removed the shuttle's galley and toilet to show separately.

Time-lapse video: Endeavour's crosstown journey

"It looks like a porta-potty," one fifth-grader said of the latter at a preview last week.

Tucked in the corner of the display pavilion is one of the massive engines that propelled Endeavour into space. Designed, built and tested by Canoga Park-based Rocketdyne, the 14-foot-long boosters were the first reusable engines used by NASA.

Each time the shuttles launched, a Rocketdyne team would pore over data from a support center at its San Fernando Valley plant, making sure the engines were ready for takeoff and performed properly during their 8 1/2-minute burn.

FULL COVERAGE: Endeavour's final journey to L.A.

The support center has been reassembled inside the museum as part of the shuttle display. All of the pieces are original to the Canoga Park facility, down to the maroon chairs and computer keyboards.

"I hope that when people see this hardware they're able to appreciate the technological complexity and technological difficulty of putting the shuttle into space and keep it going for all these years," said Mike Carlson, a Rocketdyne engineer who once managed the support center. "It wasn't easy."

And then there's Endeavour itself.

Visitors will be able to walk underneath the orbiter's weathered underbelly, so close one can read the small, white lettering on each tile. Near the rear of the shuttle, there are about a dozen tiles that were damaged during Endeavour's 25th and final mission, revealing what looks like Styrofoam underneath.

Panorama: Endeavour at the California Science Center

"It's amazing," said Diane Perlov, the museum's deputy director of exhibits. "The first time I saw it ? it brings tears to your eyes. It's really something."

The shuttle will be even more impressive in its permanent home in the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, Rudolph said. There, the shuttle will be displayed vertically as though it is about to launch, complete with an external tank and twin solid rocket boosters. That 170,000-square-foot facility, which will also feature exhibits on flight and space exploration, should open in about five years, Rudolph said.

Money for the temporary and permanent displays will come from a $200-million fundraising campaign. Rudolph said about 80% of that is earmarked for the new air and space wing.

"When we have it standing up vertically, there's nothing in the world like it," Rudolph said. "If you're going to see one space shuttle, this is going to be it."

The two other museums that house retired shuttles ? the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia ? both have reported increased attendance since their orbiters went on display. Rudolph said he expects the same boost for the Science Center, guessing the shuttle would bring attendance to about 2 million people per year, up from about 1.5 million.

Museum and NASA officials have repeatedly expressed their hope that Endeavour will encourage the next generation of engineers, scientists and astronauts.

"This thing will inspire kids to want to be astronauts," said retired astronaut Mark Kelly, who commanded Endeavour's last mission. "Maybe one of those little kids that will be looking up at this space shuttle will one day go and walk on Mars for the first time."

Amy Davis is a fifth-grade teacher at Inglewood's Century Park Elementary School. Her class watched last month as Endeavour, riding a jumbo jet, flew low over the school on its way to the Los Angeles International Airport. The children shrieked with glee as it passed over their heads.

Two students ran up to Davis. Ten-year-old Richard Hercules had tears streaming down his face.

"They're happy tears," Richard's friend told their teacher.

Richard has wanted to be an astronaut as long as he can remember. He "felt lucky" he got to see Endeavour, he said.

"That's the only space shuttle I've ever seen," he said. "It gave me a boost of wanting to be an astronaut more."

Davis wrote to the Science Center, explaining how moved Richard was by the experience. A NASA official heard the story and sent Richard an application to Space Camp in Alabama.

Richard is now working on the application, collecting letters of recommendation and writing an essay on astronaut John Glenn, trying to earn a scholarship so he can go.

"Dreams are possible," Davis said. "It was meant to be."
