It's time to get classy again, San Diego. Will Ferrell confirmed on Wednesday night that the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 comedy, "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," is a go.

Ferrell, appearing as leisure-suit wearing newsman Ron Burgundy, broke the news while making a surprise appearance on the "Conan" show that thrilled the audience. Taking the stage in a, yes, burgundy suit and wide, striped tie, Ferrell/Burgundy, ripped off a wicked flute solo, then explained to host Conan O'Brien, "I like to keep my chops up, jam with the cats here ... smoke a little tea afterwards, see if a little backstage Judy ends up on my lap."

After complimenting the host on his broadcasting skills, Burgundy shared one small criticism with O'Brien. "You look awful," he said. "You look like someone put a bright red fright wig on a skeleton and chucked it out of a helicopter."

But Burgundy wasn't just there to play the flute and insult his host, he also had an exciting bit of news. "I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas," he said. "To my friends, in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England ... as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel for 'Anchorman.' It is official, there will be a sequel to 'Anchorman.'"

And with that, Burgundy played himself off the stage with a second wicked flute solo. Back in early 2010, "Anchorman" director and co-writer Adam McKay
told MTV News that he expected much of the first movie's cast to come along for the sequel, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, as well as Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Chris Parnell and Fred Willard.

"We had an idea and we contacted Steve and Paul and Koechner and Christina and checked in with everyone and they were all game for it," McKay said at the time. "It's a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone's prices went up and everyone's time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do it, which you don't see very often in Hollywood — and cut their price substantially."

The original grossed more than $91 million worldwide. Ferrell and McKay will once again co-write for the sequel and McKay will direct again, with production slated to begin at the end of this year for a 2013 release.

Are you looking forward to a sequel to "Anchorman"? Let us know in the comments below!

Amanda Adamson, standing left, Trish Dunbar, Heather Blake, Marc Paolicelli, Kelli Hernandez, Casssandra Perkins, Linda Zinn, Kelly Bar-Or and Adam Smith with Girl and Boy of the Year Taylor Jones and Jack Travis Selden.

A campaign to determine who will be crowned Man of the Year and Woman of the Year by Rocky Mountain chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has begun. Fourteen candidates are in the running, with the winners determined by the amount of money raised.

They will be crowned May 19 at the Grand Finale Gala held at the Marriott City Center.

The 2012 campaign is being chaired by Jody Epstein and her three children: Amy Schneider and Zach and Jason Epstein. Their husband and father, David Epstein, lost his battle with acute myeloid leukemia 13 years ago. ?We know that David would be behind our effort to help other families ? navigating the cancer journey,? Jody Epstein says. ?Our intention is to truly make a difference.?

Click below for this year?s contenders.

Kelly Douglas Hernandez of Denver, a principal with Cascade Financial Management. She entered the competition to celebrate her own blood cancer survivorship.

Marc Paolicelli of Denver, vice president for corporate business development at RK Mechanical. He is a blood cancer survivor and member of the board of trustees for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s Rocky Mountain chapter.

Linda Roberts Zinn of Denver, a supporter of the cause.

Tammy Adducci of Englewood, a managing broker for Coldwell Banker. She is running in honor of a co-worker?s adult son who is battling leukemia and for a friend who lost her battle with leukemia 30 years ago.

Jonathan Keller of Englewood, a broker associate with RE/MAX Professionals. He is running in honor of a close friend who is a survivor. ?I watched his emotional and physical battle with blood cancer and felt I had to get involved,? Keller says.

Trish Dunbar of Evergreen, a teacher at Rocky Mountain Academy. She entered the competition to ?make a difference in the lives of kids with cancer.?

Kelly Bar-Or of Greenwood Village, who is running in honor of her mother who was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago. Bar-Or was nominated by the Epstein family.

Heather Blake of Highlands Ranch, a broker associate with RE/MAX Leaders. She is running in support of a friend coping with blood cancer and in memory of her grandmother.

Adam P. Smith of Highlands Ranch, president of the Colorado Real Estate Finance Group. He is running in honor of his grandmother, who was diagnosed with lymphoma 2 1/2 years ago and his father, who was diagnosed with leukemia 1 1/2 years ago. Both are in remission and are doing well, Smith reports. He also was nominated by the Epstein family.

Jeff Wasden of Highlands Ranch, owner of PROformance Apparel. Wasden entered the race in honor of his mother, who died of cancer, and to create awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the community.

Dr. Michael Plotnick of Johnstown, who practices at the Center for Women?s Health at Northern Colorado Medical Center. He entered to help create awareness for the cause in Northern Colorado and to pay tribute to the memory of his 9-year-old son, who lost a long battle with leukemia.

Amanda Adamson of Larkspur, who was nominated by LLS trustee Creigh Kelly after learning that Adamson?s friend and former rival basketball mate had battled non-Hodgkins lymphoma and is in remission.

Edna Chang-Grant of Littleton. She was nominated by Jamie Angelich and wants to do what she can to help in the fight against cancer. Chang-Grant has been touched by the disease and seen the effects that it can take on individuals and their loved ones.

Cassandra Perkins of Parker, an actress, spokesmodel and student. Perkins, 15, is the host of an Internet talk show, ?Be Your Own You? and has been nominated for a Heartland regional Emmy. She is also an actress and stunt girl who wants to create awareness about leukemia and lymphoma in her worldwide network.

Also taking part in the Grand Finale Gala ? although they are not required to raise money ? are the Boy and Girl of the Year, Jack Travis Selden and Taylor Jones.

Selden, 7, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in September, 2008, and completed treatment in August, 2011. He is a first grader at Governor?s Ranch Elementary School. Jones, who is also 7, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in September, 2008, and has been in remission for 2 1/2 years. She is a first grader at Martinez Elementary School in Colorado Springs.

Critical charges dropped against Michigan militia

(AP) ? A federal judge dismissed the most serious charges Tuesday against seven members of a Michigan militia who were rounded up as homegrown extremists accused of plotting war against the U.S., saying their expressed hatred of law enforcement didn't amount to conspiracy against the government.

The decision is an embarrassment for the government, which secretly planted an informant and an FBI agent inside the Hutaree militia four years ago and claimed members were armed for war in rural southern Michigan.

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts granted requests for acquittal on the most serious charges: conspiring to commit sedition, or rebellion, against the U.S. and conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction. Only weapons charges remain against two of the defendants, who have been on trial since Feb. 13.

"The court is aware that protected speech and mere words can be sufficient to show a conspiracy. In this case, however, they do not rise to that level," Roberts said.

Prosecutors said Hutaree members were anti-government rebels who combined training and strategy sessions to prepare for a violent strike against federal law enforcement, triggered first by the slaying of a police officer.

But there never was an attack. Defense lawyers say highly offensive remarks about police and the government were wrongly turned into a high-profile criminal case that drew public praise from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who called Hutaree a "dangerous organization."

Militia leader David Stone's "statements and exercises do not evince a concrete agreement to forcibly resist the authority of the United States government," Roberts said Tuesday. "His diatribes evince nothing more than his own hatred for ? perhaps even desire to fight or kill ? law enforcement; this is not the same as seditious conspiracy."

There was no immediate comment from U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade.

The FBI had put a local informant, Dan Murray, inside the Hutaree in 2008 and subsequently added an agent from New Jersey, Steve Haug. Known as "Jersey Steve," he posed as a trucker and spent months secretly recording talks with Stone. He even served as Stone's best man at his wedding. The wedding party dressed in military fatigues.

Haug repeatedly talked to Stone about building pipe bombs and getting other sophisticated explosives. The FBI rented a warehouse in Ann Arbor where the agent would invite Stone and others to store and discuss weapons.

Haug told jurors he was "shocked" by Stone's knowledge of explosives, noting it matched some of his own instruction as a federal agent.

Stone was recorded saying he was willing to kill police and even their families. He considered them part of a "brotherhood" ? a sinister global authority that included federal law enforcers and United Nations troops.

Stone had bizarre beliefs: He suspected Germany and Singapore had aircraft stationed in Texas, and thousands of Canadian troops were poised to take over Michigan. He said the government put computer chips in a flu vaccine.

Stone had a speech prepared for a regional militia gathering in Kentucky in 2010, but bad weather forced him and others to return to Michigan. Instead, he read it in the van while a secret camera installed by the FBI captured the remarks.

"It is time to strike and take our nation back so that we may be free again from tyranny," Stone said. "Time is up, God bless all of you and welcome to the new revolution."

Defense attorney William Swor said Stone is a Christian who was bracing for war against the Antichrist.

"This is not the United States government. This is Satan's army," Sword told the judge Monday, referring to Stone's enemy. "What went on here was speech. What went on here was association. What went on here was constitutionally protected."

Doqnloading Quality Digital Music Files

Mar 15 2012

People who have gone online for the first time just recently take for granted the speed with which they can upload and download files. Bit for those older people who have used the Internet since its early beginnings, cable Internet connections and high speed modems were not yet available. The Internet functioned through dialup connections, which means the digital data had to go through telephone cables. These cables were not meant for high speed connections, which necessitated digital compression technology. Large bitmap images became gifs and jpegs, and movie snippets were shown in grainy movs, avis, and mpegs. In order to share music online, songs from compact discs became smaller wmas, mp3s, and real audio files.

From the word compression, this implies that the size of the files became smaller. This was necessary so that in order to?share music music community members can download files from the Internet in a fairly reasonable amount of time. It took about thirty minutes to download a typical song?a length of time that modern high-speed Internet users would certainly find interminable?but it was better than the 10 or more hours needed had the songs remained uncompressed. But because of the decrease in file size, a certain amount of audio details had to be lost.

With the modern availability of high-speed connections, you can now download bigger music files from the online music community. With two songs of the same time duration, the bigger file size usually determines which has better quality. Other determining include sampling frequency and bitrate. By examining these factors, you can determine the quality of the music you download from the Internet.

Canon Pixma MX372 Office All-in-One

As the Canon Pixma MX372 Office All-in-One?s $79.99 (direct) price suggests, it's very much a personal printer. It's also one of Canon's office inkjets?as indicated by the MX designation. Aimed primarily at home and micro offices, but also a potential choice for one person's use in any size office, it delivers a lot more capability than you might expect from a sub-$100 MFP. However, its high running cost makes it much less attractive than it would otherwise be.

Like most inkjet MFPs today, the MX372 can serve in a dual role for home and home office, or even as a strictly home printer. However, much like the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars), it's unusual for the price in focusing more on the office side of that dual role.

In addition to printing from and scanning to a PC, it can fax from a PC and work as a standalone copier and fax machine. And unlike typical home-oriented printers, it can scan multi-page documents and legal-size pages easily thanks to a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) that supplements the letter-size flatbed. Missing from the MX372 are such photo-centric features as the ability to print directly from memory cards and PictBridge cameras.

Also missing is both Wi-Fi and wired network support, which makes it hard to share the printer easily, and largely limits it to personal use. The paper handling is also best reserved for a single person's use, with only a 100-sheet paper capacity, manual duplexing, and no paper handling upgrade options.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the MX372 is standard fare. For my tests, I installed it on a Vista system using a USB connection?the only choice. The speed is best described as lackadaisical even for the price, but not too much slower than most of its competition.

Canon Pixma MX372 Office All-in-One

On our business applications suite I timed the MX372 (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 2.0 pages per minute (ppm). That?s essentially a tie with the HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One ($99.99 direct, 3.5 stars) at 2.1 ppm, but a bit slower than the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 All-in-One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars) at 2.7 ppm. It's also a lot slower than the Brother MFC-J430w , at 4.3 ppm, but keep in mind that the Brother printer's fast speed for business applications is a big part of why it is Editors' Choice.

Photo speed for the MX372 was more definitively slow, averaging 2 minutes 9 seconds for a 4 by 6. The Brother MFC-J430w wasn't much faster, at 1:59, but most of the competition leaves both printers in the dust, with the HP Officejet 4500 clocking in at 1:15, for example, and the Kodak ESP C310 taking just 44 seconds.

Output Quality and Other Issues
The MX372's overall output quality is below par, but not enough to be an issue. Text quality in particular is well below par, which translates to few fonts scoring well at sizes below 8 points. As long as you don't have an unusual need for smaller fonts, however, you shouldn't have any complaints.

Graphic output does better, at only slightly below par, but still good enough for any internal business need including PowerPoint handouts and the like. On the other hand, it's a bit short of what I'd want for output going to an important client or customer who I needed to impress with a sense of my professionalism.

Photos were par for an inkjet MFP overall, except for an obvious tint in black and white output. Color photos were generally at the low end of what I'd expect from drugstore prints, making the output acceptable for snapshots. If you want your photos to look their best, you'll want to look elsewhere, but that's pretty much expected from a printer that claims to be office-centric.

One other issue that can matter a lot or a little, depending on how much you expect to print, is the high claimed cost per page, at 6.3 cents for a mono page and 13.8 cents for a color page. That's 2.5 cents more per page than the MFC-J430w for both mono and color. Given the $20 difference in price between the two, you only have to print 800 pages before you've made up the difference. Beyond that, the total cost for the MX372 would be higher than for the Brother MFC-J430w, and the difference would increase with every page you print.

For many people, the high running cost will be enough reason to look elsewhere, since it's hard to imagine anyone printing fewer than 800 pages over the life of a printer. But if you don't expect to print much more than that, or don't mind the cost, or what you really need is some combination of an ADF equipped scanner, fax machine, and the ability to fax files from your PC's hard drive, the Canon Pixma MX372 Office All-in-One can do the job.

Sudden death | 20th Century Woman

I am always happy to arrive in New Zealand. We landed at 6 AM as Auckland was waking up. The flight was long and our old bones stiffened in the cramped airplane seats. We had, as usual, an hour to relax in the Airport before my cousin Jocelyn and her husband Albert collected us, so I arranged a sim card for my telephone and got a New Zealand phone number; then we had coffee. Jerry remembered how to order it in New Zealand; he had a ?long black? and I had a ?flat white? (translation: regular size cup of strong black coffee and a cafe au lait.) Sparrows darted through open doors, scavenging crumbs dropped by munching travelers.

The rest of that day was recovery time. We unpacked a few things, took a short rest and walked a familiar route part way up Pukekohe Hill. It?s a steep hill with huge views all around, but we weren?t ready to go all the way up the first day. The next day, Saturday, a family party was planned for my 80th birthday, though it was 4 days early. This was the day my cousin?s 2 children, their spouses and 3 of her grandchildren could assemble at a local Chinese restaurant with us. They gave me a pair of pretty earrings and we had a good time. Jocelyn?s grandson, Bryce, brought his trumpet along and in the parking lot he skillfully blared out a resounding Happy Birthday.

Bryce trumpeting my birthday

Sunday we would rest, then Monday drive 3 hours north to Whangerei to visit our 93 year old aunt and have another family party.

Jerry and I had some things to worry about at home, but I tried not to dwell on them. Jerry?s brother, Bert, was unwell. He had recently had open heart surgery and he was addicted to codeine pain pills. His only caretakers were some people whose motives we had long suspected. We thought they were more interested in his money than his health. We were relieved when another friend whom we like and trust, agreed to go to Arizona to take care of him. We expected this friend to stay with Bert while we were in New Zealand. We planned to go to Arizona to check on him as soon as we got home. A few days before we left our friend called to say he couldn?t stay with Bert any longer. Bert was addicted to prescribed opiates and had been put on methadone to treat his addiction. He was allowed one methadone pill per day, but he demanded more and when this was refused he threatened to shoot himself.? Our friend said he couldn?t stay under those circumstances. So Bert was again left in the care of people we did not trust.

We had left Jocelyn?s phone number so we could be reached in case Bert got worse. Sunday morning as we were having breakfast the call came. I had been jumpy every time the phone rang anyhow, and when Jocelyn answered and? said, ?Oh yes, Jerry, he?s right here,? I knew it would be bad news. My quiet, calm husband took the phone, listened a minute and gasped, ?Oh no!? and again, ?Oh, no!?. Then, ?When did it happen?? He listened a little longer, walked into the living room with the phone and stood at the window with his back to the room. I put my arms around him from behind. I could feel him tremble. He listened some more, then said, ?Of course, I?ll take care of all the expenses.? and finally hung up. As he turned to walk into the bedroom I could see that his eyes were wet.

What the man who had been taking care of Bert had told Jerry was this: the day before (the day of my birthday party) Bert had shot himself in the head. He had gone to a convenience store with the caretaker. While the caretaker was in the store Bert stayed in the truck and used the caretaker?s loaded gun, conveniently placed between the seats, to kill himself. The man complained to Jerry about the mess in his truck. He did not say sorry for your loss or express any regret.

The rest of our vacation, though we tried to salvage some of it with walks and quiet talks, was pretty much taken up with emails, faxes, telephone consultations with lawyers, lawyers in Washington, Arizona, and we even had to have a lawyer in New Zealand notarize papers for the funeral home.

Bert was a year and a half younger than Jerry. Though they had lived completely different lives, in many ways they understood each other profoundly, intertwined by family, proximity, and the occasional need to act together as they did when their mother was dying. They started out in Eureka, CA. Jerry left there shortly after he got out of the army and went to the University of Alaska for his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Bert didn?t finish high school and did not succeed in the Army. He was out after 3 months. Their mother told Jerry that Bert had had a ?breakdown.? Bert was married once for a month or two. Other than that he lived alone all his life.? He followed Jerry to Alaska, but unlike Jerry, he didn?t take to cold. Eventually both of them and their mother ended up on San Juan Island. Jerry and his late wife raised their son there. Bert built things and flew airplanes. That?s what Jerry did, but Bert came to flying late and logged many fewer hours in the air than Jerry. His buildings were never standard so he tended to be constantly in disputes with building inspectors. Nevertheless, with his frugal lifestyle he ended up with a comfortable income and little bits of property all over the place.

I believe that Bert actually had a few good years of life left in him, but he couldn?t give up the idea that he knew better than anyone else how to manage his health. He knew better than the doctors, than the physical therapists, than his real friends and than his brother. The two people who ended up taking care of him lasted by being careful never to cross him, to yield to his all demands even when they were dangerous to his well being, and to flatter his ego. They manipulated him by letting him believe that he was fully in control. And when they thought they had things arranged to benefit themselves they left a loaded gun where he could reach it in a public parking lot full of people. They had lots of witnesses that he shot himself.

Bert?s death is my closest encounter with suicide. I have stayed awake at night these last 2 weeks, wondering what was going through Bert?s mind when he put the gun to his head. I know he was depressed ? he was on anti-depressants when he was with us. I think he felt he was losing control of his life. He was angry. He had quarreled with everyone who had tried to help him. He was beginning to be angry even with the caretakers he thought were his friends. Was he afraid of death? Was killing himself an act of consummate bravery? Or was this his last triumphant act to prove his control over his destiny.

It was a tragic end to a long life of jousting modern windmills. Just before he died he lost his legal battle with the Lincoln county weed board. He had sued them for coming on his property to spray noxious weeds. He lost his last appeal three weeks before he died.

Buffalo bushmeat linked to brucellosis in Botswana

Among the people of Botswana, the wild African buffalo is the burger of choice. But this bushmeat could be making consumers sick: the animals harbour a pathogen that can cause severe fever in humans. The same pathogen is also common in some populations of buffalo in the US.

In 1974, researchers discovered that a bacterium from the genus Brucella, which causes brucellosis in humans, was widespread in herds of wild buffalo in Botswana. In response, the government built fences to isolate infected buffalo from domestic cattle, which can pass the disease to humans through meat, dairy products and close contact.

However, although the fences are effective and the pathogen has been eradicated from livestock, brucellosis still occurs in Botswanans. To find out why, Kathleen Alexander of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and her team sampled over 1000 large wild animals, including buffalo, in Botswana. They found that about 6 per cent still carry antibodies against Brucella, suggesting that the disease remains in these wild populations.

Alexander's team suggests that hunting buffalo for bushmeat ? both legally and illegally ? may account for human cases. It is not just the hunters who risk infection: Alexander says that families will often buy bushmeat and process it together, possibly contracting the pathogen through the animal's blood.

The risk of catching brucellosis from wildlife has also been a longstanding debate in the US: the iconic Yellowstone bison have been blamed for infecting cattle with the disease, which can cause pregnant cows to abort. And in Florida, there are reports of hunters getting brucellosis from wild boar, says report co-author Jason Blackburn of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

"We need to make sure we have a clear understanding of how humans are interacting with wildlife and [identify] alternative sources of risk," says Blackburn. In African countries some cases of brucellosis may be misdiagnosed as malaria ? the most common suspect for fever ? because it may be falsely assumed only those who handle livestock risk exposure to Brucella.

Although brucellosis is rarely fatal in adults and can be treated with antibiotics, it may cause abortions. And in Botswana, about 40 per cent of the urban population is HIV-positive, says Alexander. For them, even a mild infection can be very serious.

Graphic highlights Peyton Manning???s career with the Indianapolis Colts

(AP) ? Peyton Manning is getting an early glimpse into life as a free agent.

Hours after a tearful, trying farewell news conference in Indianapolis, Manning flew back to his home in Miami and was immediately peppered with questions about his next landing spot. He'd better get used to it. The scene is likely to play out at every destination he visits until he decides where to play next season.

"I haven't thought about teams and I don't know who is interested, I really don't. This is all new to me," Manning said. "I think my agent has been getting calls at 4 o'clock today since this started. I haven't talked to him because I literally just got off the plane and am ready to start back on my training again because that's what I need to do."

If Manning is healthy, he'll be the hottest commodity to hit the open market in decades: a Super Bowl-winning quarterback with Hall of Fame credentials.

After the Colts decided not to pick up Manning's $28 million bonus, team owner Jim Irsay ended months of speculation by releasing the 14-year veteran and longtime face of the franchise. Indianapolis is likely to find Manning's replacement in April's draft, presumably Stanford's Andrew Luck; the Colts have the first overall pick.

For Manning, Irsay and Colts fans, it was heart-wrenching saying goodbye.

Irsay and Manning exchanged hugs, laughs and even took turns fighting back tears during a news conference at the Colts' team complex. The room is normally used for celebrations such as hiring coaches or general managers or retirements, and it's decorated with banners of the Colts' greatest players. Manning's banner is flanked by two Hall of Famers, Eric Dickerson and John Mackey.

But this was a sad occasion, filled with emotion.

"I do love it here, I love the fans and I will always enjoy having played for such a great team. I will leave the Colts with nothing but good thoughts and gratitude to Jim, the organization, my teammates, the media and especially the fans," Manning said, his voice cracking. "As I go, I go with just a few words left to say. A few words I want to address to Colts fans everywhere. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I truly have enjoyed being your quarterback."

At age 35, the man who won one Super Bowl, a record four MVP awards and who helped the Colts land a new stadium and the city's first Super Bowl is starting over.

Gone will be his longtime friends and teammates and the system he perfected. Manning knew the Colts' offense so well, he could literally point out a flaw in the defense, flap his arms, bark new play calls and signal the changes to teammates ? usually before the play clock expired. Gone, too, will be the familiar No. 18 in blue and white. Irsay promised no Colts' player would wear that number again.

Instead, Manning must learn the proper free-agent etiquette.

"I have no idea who wants me, what team wants me, how this process works. I don't know if it's like college recruiting where you go take visits," he said. "I mean, this is all so new to me. The Indianapolis Colts are the only team that I've ever played for, the only team I ever worked out for."

Workouts will almost certainly be part of the process as Manning attempts to prove he can perform like his old self after missing the entire 2011 season because of a damaged nerve that caused weakness in his right arm. He had the most recent of his multiple neck surgeries Sept. 8.

On Wednesday, Manning insisted he's closer than ever to being 100 percent though he's not completely recovered. Even Irsay acknowledged Manning is on the mend.

"I'm throwing it pretty well. I still have some progress to make, but I've come a long way," Manning said. "That's been the most fun part is being back out there on the field. I'm doing better, I continue to work hard and hope to continue making progress."

If he does, there will be plenty of suitors lining up for Manning.

Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel has already said he's interested. At the recent NFL scouting combine in Indy, Miami coach Joe Philbin didn't provide a name but certainly described a player matching Manning's profile when asked what he was looking for in a quarterback. Jets coach Rex Ryan has said his team had already looked at 10 free-agent quarterbacks, and you can bet he'll take a peek at No. 11, too.

Other rumored destinations include Arizona, Seattle and Washington.

Manning said he does not have a favorite and isn't even sure who has already called his agent, Tom Condon, who did not return messages left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Seeing Manning in any logo other than Colts' trademark horseshoe will be hard to fathom.

"It's going to be awkward especially if he ends up in the division and we have to play him a couple of times a year. It's not going to look right. It's going to be like seeing Joe Montana in a Chiefs uniform," said IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter, an Indianapolis native who has been attending Colts games since Jeff George was the starting quarterback. "Hopefully, he'll perform better than Joe did in the Chiefs uniform."

Irsay said Wednesday he believes Manning will return to form. So does Bill Polian, who drafted Manning with the No. 1 pick in 1998.

So why not keep Manning?

It just didn't make sense.

The Colts are embarking on an ambitious rebuilding project following a dismal 2-14 season, Indy's worst in two decades, and want their rookie quarterback to start immediately. Luck is considered the most NFL-ready college quarterback since Manning entered the league.

Manning, meanwhile, is entering the twilight of his career and wants to chase a second Super Bowl ring, something Irsay didn't believe was feasible in Indy.

"I just think that as a franchise where we are right now with the salary cap and where we are rebuilding, we are definitely a few years away," Irsay said. "I want to see him (Manning) come back and play great. There is no question about it. It is just that here, just like in 2001 when he was completely healthy and everything else, we didn't have everything to surround him. I want that opportunity for him, as well, to succeed at the end of his career."

Irsay and Manning both insisted money was not the issue.

And if Manning winds up in the right spot, the man with 50,000 yards passing, 399 career touchdowns, a 227-game streak of starts and 11 Pro Bowl appearances may finally get that second Super Bowl ring.

"I truly missed just playing quarterback this year," Manning said. "I've done it for such a long time and I love everything about it, and I realize that I'm not going to play forever, and I think I'm going to know the time to stop playing. But right now, I still want to play. I want to get back out there and play. I don't feel like everybody will say, 'He has to do this' or 'He has to prove that.' I don't feel that way. I know how much I love being a quarterback and love football and I want to go play again."
